I remember I was about to watch the world series between SF and Oakland when all of the sudden everything started moving back and forth. The refrigerator started moving away from the wall and everything began to fall of shelves.

It was like:

"Good evening and welcome to..." RUMBLE RUMBLE CRASH

Cracked the sheet rock walls a little between seams.

Some guy was walking around with a AM radio and said the Bay Bridge collapsed. My neighbors set up a generator and we watched some TV.

Then my girlfriends sister was stuck in San Fran and we had to go get her from 1 Market street. There were civilians with pistols regulating traffic and weird vibes floating around, but people were cool.

But the most important fact isn't just the magnitude (height of the seismic wave) but the intensity (force released that build-up strain) and the depth (distance of the epicenter to the surface), all of them combined plus the direction of the fault (horizontal or vertical) over a specific fault area (miles long). This gives a particular fingerprint for that tremor. Taking on account all these measurements we calculate the final magnitude of a major earthquake as follows: the general area of occurrence of the quake is divided into small patches. The movement of each patch is combined with all the patches and we match patterns to find out which patches moved and how much. If the patches moved a lot then we can expect that the patch won’t move until plate tectonics create the strain to build up again.

So a 2.1 quake is how many times stronger than a 2.O Quake ? When we had that 7.0 quake here. People on the road couldnt feel it. One cop on his bike didnt feel it and drove right off an non existant overpass. Have you ever looked at the mountains during a quake ? Clouds of dust from the slides .
