When Marx declared, all that is solid melts into air he was referring to the challenge modernity posed to every idea that was held firm and considered stable. The maelstrom of modernity changed the course of architecture too. Nothing appeared to be permanent except change. However, a few architects resisted this course. They believed that modernity fragmented society and made architecture meaningless. In order to set right this anomaly, they focussed on things that do not change in architecture.

Architectural theorists like Christopher Alexander and Norberg-Schulz put experience as the foundational aspect of design and through that drew attention to the timeless way of building. These ideas are still influential in contemporary architecture. In this book Yatin Pandya follows these ideas and searches for the timeless quality in architecture. As mentioned in the preface, the book interprets Indian traditional architecture as universal dictums, which it wishes to reinstate in contemporary times.

The new World Trade Center Transportation Center is just a marvelous piece of work by architect Santiago Calatrava!

I love the way he combines sculpture with space in an organic way.

Being inside the Transportation Center would make me feel like being Jonah inside the belly of the whale. :)

Way to go, America!!!!

Malmö, Sweden just got more alluring. Celebrated Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava's completed skyscraper is now fully erect.

Now the second tallest building in Europe, the Turning Torso is based on the human body's torso twisting in mid-motion. 623-feet, 9 distorted cubes and 45 floors complete the overwhelming residential and office structure

Matt:

I know I haven't posted here in a while, but I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy this thread and appreciate the great content you've been putting up here.

I've been a fan of Santiago Calatrava for a long time now. It's so nice to see him move away from the big square steel boxes into architecture that's much more organic and tasteful.

Long may the new architects live and prosper!

They're arguing over the size and surroundings in the link shown.

No matter where they build it, it shall be magnificent!
