Kinda got bogged down in random uninteresting details today. Part of working here is being "on call" to cover the systems of other projects/networks when other admins are out of the lab. Such an instance hit me today and occupied a large chunk of my time. As well, Eric did compile a new multibeam client and put it in beta yesterday. There were some problems with the Windows version - he has a new client in beta now. Very close.. very close.. - Matt -- BOINC/SETI@home network/web/science/development person -- "Any idiot can have a good idea. What is hard is to do it." - Jeanne-Claude |

Part of working here is being "on call" to cover the systems of other projects/networks when other admins are out of the lab. Such an instance hit me today and occupied a large chunk of my time. Matt: "BOINC Emergency Hotline, this is Matt speaking. Please state the nature of your BOINC emergency." Caller: "Yeah, Hi. I'm running a BOINC project and all these goofy people with funny avatars and strange names keep posting music videos and starting threads about being the last person to post!" Matt: "Ah yeah, you've got BOINCers. Pretty normal." Caller: "But this is a new project! We just opened for registration 15 minutes ago and we have 20 teams and 150 accounts already!" Matt: "OH! You've been infested by the ATA, that's Alpha Testers Anonymous. They're tough to get rid of. Have you tried running error free? They get bored with no problems to fix and usually move on. OR crash your database so the accounts and teams get wiped out! That sometimes works!" Caller: "Yeah I've tried both and they keep finding us! It's all "Nice to see you!", "I win!", "Click here for my favourite song!, "Join this Team!", Ahhhh! It's enough to drive a scientist nuts! Can't we ban them or something?" Matt: "They tried that at Predictor, I wouldn't recommend it. I'm afraid you are going to have to put up with them. Kinda like bees in a garden, they do the important work but leave 'em alone or they might sting ya! Hahahahahaha! Hope this helps you!" Caller: "Yeah, Thanks alot pal! Stoopid tech support ....... CLICK!" Matt: "AHHHHHH! Another satisfied customer! NEXT!!! BOINC Emergency Hotline, this is Matt speaking. Please state the nature of your BOINC emer......" DONATE TO SETI |

Very good! Sure I've heard something like that before... Something to do with the Borg harassing a holographic avatar... Sorry to bust up the fun, but I suspect when Matt said "help out other projects" he meant "other projects here at the Space Sciences Lab" and not "manning the intergalactic BOINC project hotline." |

Press '1' for Klingon..... Looks like the penguins made into here as well. Not my original plan. If you are interested and have not yet nominated please go over and look at the Cat People or Dog People which I think is a Cat Vs Dog like thread going. I think that's where the penguins came from. And knowing my luck you would sit through listening to all the language options and then discover at the end that their was no option for English or 'Human'. But reminds me of the 'Top ten things you would hear if you had a Klingon programmer working for you'. Now if I could only remember where that site was... Never surrender and never give up. Hi, quick googling, found http://www.arunet.co.uk/tkboyd/prgmr1.htm 73 Iztok --------------------------------------------------------- A little bit of humor for you. I've cut a few that I didn't find as funny as the rest. If everyone did this, the jokes we see circulating would get better and better, wouldn't they?! TOP 12 THINGS LIKELY TO BE OVERHEARD IF YOU HAD A KLINGON PROGRAMMER: 12. "Specifications are for the weak and timid!" 10. "You cannot really appreciate Dilbert unless you've read it in the original Klingon." 9. "Indentation?! -- I will show you how to indent when I indent your skull!" 8. "What is this talk of 'release'? Klingons do not make software 'releases.' Our software 'escapes' leaving a maimed trail of designers and quality assurance people in its wake." 7. "Klingon function calls do not have 'parameters' -- they have 'arguments' -- and they ALWAYS WIN THEM." 6. "Debugging? Klingons do not debug. Our software does not coddle the weak." 5. "I have challenged the entire quality assurance team to a Bat-Leth contest. They will not concern us again." 4. "A TRUE Klingon Warrior does not comment his code!" 1. "Our users will know fear and cower before our software. Ship it! Ship it and let them flee like the dogs they are!" * * * * * (The Klingon jokes were from a post by Tim Pierce, twp@rootsweb.com, previously published by RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative, RootsWeb Review: RootsWeb's Genealogy News, Vol. 2, No. 25, 23 June 1999. So it was 12. I should have remembered that. I have a copy on the wall beside my computer at uni. I printed it out quite some time ago. I think my memory is going... But I find them to be funny, but then I am a sci-fi fan... Never surrender and never give up. In the darkest hour there is always hope. |

Hey! That one could do very well for a Microsoft EULA! (Disclaimer: just my opinion of course...). Have you read all the way through their latest EULA? Do you fully agree with it? Hey! That one could do very well for a Microsoft EULA! (Disclaimer: just my opinion of course...). My Recycle Bin showed something in it. When I opened it, it showed empty. When I pressed Empty Recycle Bin, it asked "Delete Windows?" I was tempted. |
