24 Hours of Le Mans 16 - 17 June 2007

Official website for Le Mans 24 hours race

From the Wiki: 24 Hours of Le Mans

Entry list

The good news is that Tom Kristensen, the only 7 times winner of the race, is back in the Audi 2 crew. He's back again after his bad accident at Hockenheimring April 22, 2007.

So we can all look forward to a close race between last years winners, Frank Biela, Emanuele Pirro, and Marco Werner, in Audi 1 against Rinaldo Capello, Tom Kristensen, and Allan McNish, in Audi 2. Or maybe some of the other cars/crews can beat the Audis this year?

Thanks. Yes, I took these pics of the screen of my tv last year of when the Audi 7 were in pit, so it came behind the Audi 8 and the Dutch Pescarolo.

About the race.

The Audi 7 were in pit for a very long time, as you can see it lost 13 laps up to the winning Audi even they were side by side before the pit stop for repairing, and it cost Tom Kristensen the chance for his 8'th victory. But the Audi 8 were just a more reliable car.

Audi 7 in pit (the first pic were taken with flash, which reflected on the tv screen)

Audi 8 out on the course

Tom Kristensen is now out of the car

And a very concerned Tom Kristensen being interviewed for Danish tv

A crash out on the course

Tom Kristensen is now back in the car in the pit

Now outside the pit and ready to go

And off he goes out to the course

Two of the LMP2 cars on the course

DTM Crash 22.04.07 Tom Kristensen at Hockenheim (in German)

Tom Kristensen has suffered badly from bad headaches, nausea, and vision disorders since, so he was afraid he couldn't get ready for Le Mans, but luckily he made it. It was a really bad accident for him.

Fuzzy

Last years Audi entries were the R10s, which ended 1st and 3rd. Remember they were both diesel, which entered for the first time and beat all the petrol runners.

This year the Audi diesels are not the only ones, as Peugeot are racing diesels as well.

I just think its very sad to see all this foreign junk rumbling around.

Whatever happened to the days when proper cars like Bentley and Jaguar used to win?

Well that's easy to answer ... Bentley and Jaguar are the junk now and Audi etc are top notch.

BTW... when was Bentley used to win ??? Back in 1920 ? :P

1990 Jaguar
1988 Jaguar
1959 Aston Martin
1955-56-57 Jaguar
1951 Jaguar

Oh, really i'm not that familiar with LeMans...
2003 ok Bentley is owned by VW/Audi(?) and uses Audi technology, that explains the 2003 win.

IF i'm getting it right from here ---> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bentley

BMW and Volkswagen came to an agreement whereby Volkswagen would manufacture both Bentley and Rolls-Royce cars until the end of 2002, whereupon the right to build Rolls-Royce cars would be BMW's alone. During this period, Volkswagen reduced its reliance on BMW as a supplier: as of 2003, BMW engines are not used in Bentley cars.

Bentley presented Queen Elizabeth II with an official State Limousine to celebrate the Golden Jubilee. In 2003, Bentley's 2-door convertible, the Bentley Azure, ceased production, and the company introduced the Bentley Continental GT, a large luxury coupe. The car is powered by a version of VW's W-12 engine.

Sadly it seems that you may be right.

The labour Government allowed Bentley and Rolls Royce to be sold down the river to foreign johnnys, and as such they are not the true british marques that they once were.

Why "sadly" ? At least that was one reason to "let" them win to show superiour tech.

Look at it that way ... IF VW/AUDI didn't own/bought Bentley at that time, they would never have won anything ... So be happy to see them winning at least once ;)

EDIT

OK ... now i'm getting the part about the "sadly" ... Had a look at your profile. ;)

Be happy to have a "Lewis Hamilton" now in F1 that shows Alonso how to drive a car. Alonsos championchips are only based on technical breakdowns of other teams.

I'm really happy to see Lewis kick Alonsos a**** ;)
(though only possible with an german engine ;P ... hehehe )

Yes, this increase the excitement and the expectations to the race. I really look forward to this weekend's events in Le Mans, both to see how the cars will be performing and, of course, to see if Tom Kristensen will be able to get his 9'th title, that would be really amazing.

Wasn't Le Mans the race that had those horrendous crashes involving ( I think ) the Porsche prototypes??

I seem to recall two crashes where the car was coming down one of the hills and it just launched into the air...flipped end over end in the air and then landed in the trees alongside the course.

I can honestly say that I have never seen a crash that even came close to being as shocking as those...and I have been watching racing for a long time.

Looks like the Le Mans 24 hour endurance was started about 50 minutes ago, and the starting grid was -

1. Audi (diesel)

2. Audi (diesel)

3. Peugeot (diesel)

4. Peugeot (diesel)

5. Pescarolo (petrol)

6. Audi (diesel)

(5 diesels taking part and all on the first 4 and number 6 of the starting grid).

Yes, it was the Mercedes CLR incidents where the Mercedes became airborne because an aerodynamic design flaw in the CLR allowed for large amounts of air to build up underneath the nose of the car, especially when following another car and at the tops of hills.

Here's another video of the incident: Le Mans 99' Mercedes CLR-GT1 Crash Live

Luckily the driver Mark Webber survived.

Yes, that took me with surprise, and I had to program the right channel into my tv, because my cable tv provider had made some changes some time ago, and the tv station which sends the race live has changes it to a channel which I hadn't added yet.

So I'm not quite up to date with what's going on, but Tom Kristensen in Audi 2 is in the lead now.

http://www.lemans.org/24heuresdumans/pages/chronos_gb.html (Be sure to be on the Race tab, my browser goes automatically to the warmup tab, for some reason)

They have had the safety car out, I don't know why, I need some time to catch up on what's going on, now I have coded the channel into my tv.

I just hear that Audi 3 has crashed and that's why the safety car is out. They need to clean out the debris and repair the crash barrier, they say on tv right now.

And Tom in Audi 2 is in pit right now...

The safety cars have been out a heck of a lot ATM. Bursts of raun, some cars flying off.

With all these restrictions, not a lot seems to be happening, except the race is between Audi and Peugeot and Pescarolo.

The race positions seem to be -

1. Audi
2. Peugeot
3. Pescarolo
4. Peugeot
5. Audi
6. Pescarolo (NOTE: I think this is the right order, or very close)

- the number 3 Audi I believe is now out of the race, as lifting equipment has been brought to it.

Lots of rain on and off, and the cars flicking between slicks and wet weather tyres, when the safety car is out.
