I'm curious as to why certain computers (running windowsXP and not some funky OS architecture that doesn't have a compiled S@H) is still running old clients. These old clients don't claim the "correct" number of credits, and often are overriding the claims of more recent versions (which appear to be very consistant in their claims).

I thought the server was supposed to upload to the user a new client when the old one was outdated, assuming they were running a stock client and not an optimized version (ie, no client_info.xml present)

I've been encountering multiple users still running 4.45 on XP.

Not a big bitching...just a curiosity.

S@H is a application not client (those are automaticly downloaded), Boinc client is a shell and SETI crew can't do nothing with old clients. You get wrong with those two different things. Sorry for my bad English :)

Ivailo is correct. Only the science app is automatically updated. The BOINC client must be manually updated by the user.

To add to what Ozz said (and your reason), reasons for running old CC's:

1.) To work problems with going through proxies in certain circumstances (legitimate).

2.) Host on 'auto-pilot', and the user never checks the message tab, or here, or on the main BOINC web site to see what's happening (lazy).

3.) User just doesn't care if it might have an adverse effect on others if you don;t stay current if possible (rude). ;-)

Indeed, but SETI could put warning messages in red to advise the user to upgrade, if that user just happens to notice.

Actually; now, intermittent messages are popping up via the Message Tab in BOINC advising people that "BOINC Version 'X' is the current BOINC release. Go to the Project Home Page to download it." (Paraphrased slightly, but essentially correct...) 'X' presently is 5.8.16. While there are other Versions above 5.8.16, these are all "Beta" Versions for the most part; the actual Full Version "authorized" per the SETI at Home "Home Page" is 5.8.16.

With the above said; however, I am running 5.4.11 because of the complaints about the 5.8.x "flavors". Some of the complaints I actually experienced; there are many complaints, too many for me to list. So, I am waiting for a more "stable" Version; hopefully, 5.10.x flavors will fit the bill. So, for now I am ignoring the messages that have popped up at least 10 times for me, already. Also; as far as I am aware, Version 5.4.11 claims correct amount of credit per WU, anyway... Some Versions older than 5.4.11 do have issues with credit.

Sincerely,

The ability to actually report fpops_cumulative as used by setiathome_enhanced for credits was completed 27 October 2005. BOINC 5.2.5 probably has it, 5.2.6 and later certainly do.

Some OS's do not have a newer version. IE: Novell, Sparc and some others. These versions are made by volunteers, which the numbers are getting smaller and smaller.

v4.46 and later should in theory have it, but, due to a bug it didn't work before in v5.2.6.

Agreed, but the OP already defined that as 'legitimate'. Although, I'd almost bet those users would take exception to calling their OS 'funky'. :-)

"I've been encountering multiple users still running 4.45 (on XP.)"

I see the same, and I have the latest Chicken S@H 5.9.11.

See
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=134493308

Where we are two claiming 12.94 and the 4.45 version is get through with 8.69.

Then some is running with 5.4.9 and they are .01 down from my claim.

See
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=134493272

Repeating "Not a big bitching...just a curiosity."

Regards

Just for reference:

Yes it's not unusual to see a .01 or so difference between the claims when you are teamed up with hosts running the stock science app.

However, this doesn't have anything to do with what version of BOINC you are running per se, as long as it's not a very early 5x release, or 4x.

There is one optimized app exception, which is if you are running Crunch3r's early SAH Enhanced application it won't claim quite correctly (but far less 'error' than 4x clients do) due to being released before the 'credit factor' for SAH Enhanced was finalized.

HTH,

The most common used, not by Berkeley supported BOINC clients, are a long time ago (still) BOINC 5.2.x to 5.8.x clients. Including Solaris, HP-UX, Irix, *BSD,...
