Is Mandriva Linux the same or better than Ubuntu?

Phew! Errr... That 'depends'...

For 'first timers', I'd recommend Ubuntu (Mac look) or Kubuntu (Windows look).

If you want to do tweaking or try out leading edge features that will still have a few bugs, then Mandrake has a varying reputation for being on the cutting edge.

I like it because it is cutting edge and you can choose which side of that edge you want to run depending on what you install. The ony downside is that sometimes the automated hardware configuration can be a little behind what the Ubuntu developers have.

And there's lots of others to try. Unless you've got specific requirements, you can literally try all the versions you wish until you see one that you like!

Good luck,

Cheers,
Martin

If you look in the "Configure Your Computer" in the menus, you should already have listed a very large selection of software, a few GBytes-worth! There should also be an autoupdate already active.

Take a look on the Mandriva website for adding the other repositories for other software/drivers ("non-FREE" as in free of cost but with restrictive licensing) to get such as unrestricted DVD playing and a few others.

Take care not to loose too much time trying out too much!

HTH,

Good luck,
Martin

Yes, works fine.

There's various ways to install it. The instructions on the Boinc-Help link below are good. Astro has other instructions also.

Good luck,
Martin

Dell have announced that due to demand they are now offering Ubuntu linux on their machines in the US as of now. Not yet in the UK apparently.

They currently only offer it on their high end machines, the basic models, like my Inspiron 1501, still come burdened with Vista.

I recently installed Ubuntu, I liked it apart from one thing, downloaded wine, tried to install some games, got the setup windows open, entered the product keys.. but error loading files. So back to XP i think, unless anyone has any ideas on how to install games? was using wine the wrong app?

Craig.

Depends on what Windows games...

Yes, WINE provides the "Windows application interface" on Linux.

Try a web search for those games on Linux. Likely, someone else will have a fix.

(And there's a fair few games for Linux.)

Good luck,
Martin

Try using VMWare, a good guide can be found on this page.

As I mentioned before, there is a system called cedega (available from transgaming.com) that is specifically designed for making windows games work under Linux. While wine provides base application functionality it does not provide any DirectX support which is where cedega picks up.
