Message 563729 - Posted: 9 May 2007, 15:12:00 UTC - in response to Message 563709.

I've been following these threads with fascination (meanwhile, my machine is chewing over some einstein@home WUs). I love what you've done with the place, though I agree that everything will be hard to find since you tidied up. I am getting confused, however, keeping track of your different server names (thumper, sidious, et al). I wonder if, while you guys are sitting around waiting for the UPS guy, you might give us a cast list of your servers and their functions? As the say in baseball, Ya can't tell the players wit'out a program!

That's what Jocelyn, Sidious, and the other BOINC system servers do. Thumper is the Master Science Database and is really only needed when work is generated from our POV, and of course assimilate the canonical results into. IIRC, they're now considering what they can do to build up a backup for him and how that fits into the budget.

If you click on 'server status' under 'about' (at the top of the page/ home page), you'll see a listing of all the servers and their duties, etc.

Thank you, but I know about the server status.
But my request was about the actual situation about receiving, replacing of the new server. Does have Sun send the new one ???
Then of course, it need to be integrated into the system.

(so, for UNIX u haven't to pay a license.)

Only if you steal a copy.
LINUX & BSD are based on UNIX, but they are not UNIX.

While the *NIX vs. Windows issue is an interesting one, it really isn't "on topic" for this thread.

What we're talking about here is the very fastest way for the project to get back in operation.

The fastest way is for the hardware to arrive from SUN, slap in the drives, cross fingers, and watch Thumper restart.

Re-engineering with Windows is not going to be as fast.

I'll also remind everyone that the primary goal of BOINC is to allow projects to run "on the cheap" -- and that means using as much open source, open licensed software as possible.

I thought we might enjoy a quick communal sing-song: are we ready...all together now...

Fly me to the moon...let me play among the stars.
Let me see what life is like
on Jupiter and Mars

Aaah Thenkyoo

I will see your Fly me and raise you ..

Its cold outside,
There's no kind of atmosphere,
I'm all alone,
More or less.
Let me fly,
Far away from here,
Fun, fun, fun,
In the sun, sun, sun.

How about '2000 light years from home' by the Strolling Bones?

.... and for us oldies, dig out the early Pink Floyd vinyls and ....

Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun

The *NIX are here to stay, especially at the universities where all research should be done using free / open software.
Thanks for putting this right...

The key here is "what is the shortest path to a running project."

The discussion of "what would be the best platform" is a separate discussion.

The odds are very good that the (undamaged) drives will plug directly into the new chassis and just work -- and that will be far faster than re-engineering everything.

Which says nothing about the quality of *NIX, and everything about the price.

But all of that said, this thread is about getting Thumper back on line ASAP.

I'll also note that SUN quotes 5 business days for delivery. We're only 3 business days from the "order" so they're obviously doing SETI a huge courtesy by expediting delivery of a (donated) server.

Agreed the Unix systems are deffinitly more reliable as history proves but if built properly a Windows 2k or 2k3 box will have just as much uptime as their Unix counterparts.

Well, take a look at Netcraft, this should answer all questions about uptime....
Anyway, my computer is waiting, thanks to SUN not for much longer - though my other projects do benefit :-)

I want also to join the BIG thanks to all SETI TEAM(Matt, Eric and mates). Specially to Matt by keeping us informed.

Keep up the good work, we will keep on crunching as soon as available.

In the meanwhile, I am crunching for Rosetta, only until Seti starts again.

I hope it will be solved before friday, I will be traveling to Germany and will not like to use all the CPU time without crunching son Wu´s for Seti.

Greeting from Chile to all supportive seti members !

I'm happy I got some work for seti don't really know how comes but got some work done. So I'm really pleased acctually, (as I assume this is meaning the near end of the problems). correct me if I'm wrong off course. Only thing I noticed that seemed a bit "weird" is that my credits ain't showing in "Boincstats" :s. But hey we're all here to find something out their ;)

You got work because there are units out there still being crunched. If they expire, error out, etc. a new result is created and sent out. This allows those that are still out there to get done, since the Master Database doesn't need to know about more results under a single unit.

As for the Stats sites is that they are not real time. Berkeley creates a status update in an XML file about once a day, because it takes a long time to do, and a lot of resources. After that is created then the stats sites grab this file parse it out, and then your stats are already behind. Just the nature of the game.

Just to say thanks for all the work Matt and the team are putting in, I look forward to getting back on track with SETI meanwhile rosetta is getting my full attention.

Also a big thank you to Sun for their generosity.

I just posted a news item on the front page. Turns out the Sun server won't be here until Friday. According to Fed Ex tracking it just left Tennessee last night. Oh well. I'll submit more details later today in a new thread.

And a collective sigh goes up from the Seti community.......
Oh well, can't complain about Sun, you know what they say about looking a gift horse in the mouth and such.

BTW, is Matt aware that the Beta up/download server is down?

I don't know if Matt knows, I'll ask Eric.

EDIT: He says: It's actually up, we're just clobbered with requests.

Yep, it's the same problem as with the main project.
