You're OK Matthew. Don't worry about it. We see the damage
even if we can't easily click a link to it. We pray that everyone
is OK with you & yours. Personally, I'm glad I live in Ohio, where
this stuff is rare.

Kansas Tornado: Video Shows Greensburg Tornado Destruction, 7 Dead

By Lynda Johnson
May 5, 2007

A massive tornado swept through Greensburg, Kansas, killing at least seven people. The massive system moved through central Kansas last night spinning off several tornados and causing extensive damage in Macksville, Trousdale, St. John and Claflin. Most of Greensburg was destroyed by the tornado and video taken of the scene shows the destruction. Reports from the ground indicate that 50 percent of Greensburg has suffered extensive damage with the downtown area "wiped out," according to witnesses.

A storm spotter sent KSN a lightning-backlit photo of the tornado. In addition to the seven people killed, around 60 people were injured, and more than a dozen of those injuries were serious. The dead included six in Kiowa County, where Greensburg is located, and one in nearby Stafford County, said Sharon Watson, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Adjutant General's Department.

We continue to find folks and this will go on for a good couple days — the rescue itself," Hewitt said during a news conference. "I mean, the debris is just unbelievable. Even if you are in a basement, I mean your home is collapsed, and we've got to find a way to get to you."

According to reports some 30 people were pulled from the rubble of Kiowa County Memorial Hospital in Greensburg as the storm ripped homes off their foundations and even damaged below-ground shelters.

The tornado that struck Greensburg late on Friday damaged about 90 percent of the town about 110 miles west of Wichita, City Administrator Steve Hewitt told reporters Saturday. 1,600 residents were evacuated and they were ordered not to come back as emergency squads continued to comb the wreckage with tractors and dogs to see if any survivors remained

They are forecasting weather like this for then rest of the week. These storms usually start out in the southwest then move northeast. one good thing is the early warning system is excellent. Also, the local media coverage is very good on all three tv channels.

Does Ohio get very many tornados ?

Not really, our last big one was in Xenia, Oh. It wiped the town, (albeit, a small town) off the map. They rebuilt. We are resilient, all of us.

Greensburg tornado rated EF-5
Source: KAKE

The tornado that hit the town has been rated as an EF-5 - the largest rating the Enhanced Fujita Scale. An EF0 tornado will likely damage trees but not substantial structures, whereas an EF5 tornado can rip buildings off their foundations leaving them bare and even deform large skyscrapers.

A tornado is a violently rotating column of air which is in contact with both a cumulonimbus (or, in rare cases, cumulus) cloud base and the surface of the earth. Tornadoes can come in many sizes, but are typically in the form of a visible condensation funnel, with the narrow end touching the earth. Often, a cloud of debris encircles the lower portion of the funnel.

Most tornadoes have winds of 110 mph (175 km/h) or less, are approximately 250 feet (75 meters) across, and travel a few miles (several kilometers) before dissipating. However, some tornadoes can have winds of more than 300 mph (480 km/h), be more than a mile (1.6 km) across, and stay on the ground for dozens of miles (more than 100 kilometers).[1][2][3]

Tornadoes have been observed on every continent except Antarctica; however, most of the world's tornadoes occur in the United States.[4] Other areas which commonly experience tornadoes include New Zealand, western and southeastern Australia, south-central Canada, northwestern and central Europe, Italy, south-central and eastern Asia, east-central South America, and Southern Africa.[5]

According to the local News the tornado that Hit Greensburg , Kansas was a EF5

I had a dream last night, probably between 4 and 5 a.m., that I had been caught outside during a tornado. There was still snow on the ground. I was trying to run for cover. I was out in a street, but there were no ditches around. I ran to one side and held on to some cement or concrete thing you might find in front of some houses or along some streets. Right hand on the upper part and left hand finding a crevice at the bottom to reach in somewhat and grab a little. The dream ended with the funnel being within a few feet of me, to my right, going diagonally across the street (from left to right in my field a view) but right about at the center at the moment.

One, it is possible I consciously ended my own dream. I seem to have done that a few times in the past 16 years. (Similar to lucid dreaming.)

Two, I wonder why I dreamed it in the first place? I knew something regarding tornados had happened, but I hadn't had much of a chance to pay a lot of attention.
