Hate to rain on the parade, but the plan is to put the old disks (boot drives and all) into the new system when it arrives. It's like a brain transplant. If all goes well the machine will come up thinking it is "thumper". And so the name of the new system will be... "thumper." Ummm... ETA = Estimated Time of Arrival. When can we expect thumper to be thumping? |

Ummm... ETA = Estimated Time of Arrival. When can we expect thumper to be thumping? According to the news section of the main page, the ETA for the server is now tomorrow (Tuesday), and the ETA for work would be Wednesday at the earliest (crossing fingers) (edited to remove the nested quotes) |

They are waiting for the replacement, and normality probably returns 2 to 5 days after that. BOINC WIKI |

But I'm at work for the moment and ain't really alowed to "amuse" my self going on forum's and stuff :p Thumper (the Master Science DataBase Server) is dead. The drives appear to be OK. Sun is shipping a new server (thank you Sun). There are many details available if you read this forum. BOINC WIKI |

Sounds like you're keeping the hard drives and scrapping the rest. In windows world that's a whole new machine and you'd have to buy another license. LOL has anyone thought of the simple naming solution??? what's wrong with SUN as the name??? Perhaps it was too obvious. |

Since I last installed WinXP on my main machine (April 13,2004) I've changed pretty much everything in the system except for the main hard drive and the case. I haven't had to purchase another license, though I did have to reactivate once (new mobo, CPU, sound card, & vid card all at once), but it did it online with nary a problem. Justin |

If all goes well the machine will come up thinking it is "thumper". And so the name of the new system will be... "thumper." I had a feeling it would still be thumper, although I assumed it would be because there are other processes on other machines that go looking for thumper and would have to be reprogrammed with a new name. I also suspect that Sun wants the old thumper back so they can dissect it to see what went wrong, thus negating the discussion of using it for some other purpose that doesn't need SATA. If I'm wrong about this and it does get reused thusly, I change my previous (but unstated) preference for Helios to Phoenix.
