When will we get MultiBeam-WUs and optimized SETI@home 5.17 (or 5.18)?

The news on the front page says that Alfa data is very near.

Good news on the front page but as many here know.........

There is some sort of time distortion in Berkeley and "close" could mean anything between 1 week to 1 year.

Hope it's "close" anyway!!!!

As long as it is close but no cigarr:-)

But I would guess to close due to the quorum change.

... and optimized SETI@home 5.17 (or 5.18)?

if i got it right, we don't need optimized 5.17 apps. All optimized 5.15 apps should work well with multibeam WUs.

(correct me if i'm wrong ... Joe ?)

If I remember correctly from a similar Beta thread a new optimized app is under dev.

Well,

to make things clear: a while ago I asked Ben and Joe whether our current codebase could be ported over to 5.17, and they said yes.

To that end, you could say that development is going on, in the sense that it's planned to happen as soon as the 5.17 or later app goes to the main project.

While that may happen soon, there is no definitive date yet.

HTH,
Simon.

Simon, sorry to be off topic, but a while ago you informed me that you guys were working on an auto-update utility of sorts. Is work still going on that? And if so, how's the work coming along?

Hmmm... that's kinda interesting ... that would require a a modifiled boinc to do auto updates ... very interesting stuff ;)

Yes, 5.15 will produce correct science results with the current multibeam WUs.

BUT, the credit multiplier in 5.17 has been increased by 13.7%. Can you imagine the screams and bad feelings if we didn't match the official app? OTOH, there have been hints the project may be considering going to multibeam WUs here without a new app.

One other minor difference is that 5.15 based graphic builds won't display the identification of which beam and polarity is being crunched. No big deal, one of the fields in the WU name is a number from 3 to 16 which codes that; 3 and 4 are the two polarities of beam 0, etc.
                                                                 Joe

Well, actually I would not do it that way - instead, first I'd do a query for the most recent version (XML via Web) and then I'd use boinc_cmd to stop processing, install the app, and start it up again.

Having a modified BOINC version that does this would be great, but too much work IMO - the above could be done pretty quickly.

Regards,
Simon.

Oh ok thought maybe we were already getting Arecibo WU's because the ones I downloaded yesterday are significantly larger than I've seen in a long time.

Well Simon, Since there is an Official Windows Boinc Client in the works in 64bit for XP x64 (and maybe Vista x64 too), Can a 64 bit Optimized Multibeam App be done?

To which I add: perhaps one that works quite well with AMD Opteronâ„¢'s, hmm? Especially the SSE3 instruction set? (I'd like to use those 64 bit instructions I paid for! NTM Win XP Pro x64 on SETI, without the penalty of shifting back and forth from 64 to 32 bit mode [Currently only used for CPDN])

Mmm, I thought that all of SETI's data came from Arecibo... not just the Multi-beam... :-))> <G>
