Back on the server name issue.... Just so you know, here's the official explanation on Thumper's name. October 5, 2006 - 21:30 UTC Last night we successfully finished migrating all the science data off the old server (castelli) onto the new one (thumper). So far, so good. However, we still have to move the beta data over to thumper and until then the beta project is offline. The new database still needs some minor tuning, but this will happen during regular (or very quick) outages, none of which would effect the usual result/workunit flow. By the way, the name "thumper" is just the pet name that Sun gave the new line of Sun Fire X4500 systems. If we get another, it'll be called "bambi." Actually, the thumpers in Dune were used to call Makers (worms) for riding. Factory crawlers were used to harvest spice, and ornithopters were aircraft used to patrol and watch for worms. I just finished re-reading the Dune series. The movie was horrible. MRB Motorsports #37 1937 Chevy Sedan (Legends) www.northstarspeedway.com |

Actually, the thumpers in Dune were used to call Makers (worms) for riding. Factory crawlers were used to harvest spice, and ornithopters were aircraft used to patrol and watch for worms. I just finished re-reading the Dune series. The movie was horrible. I agree, despite having a pretty good cast. Like Peter Jackson with LotR, David Lynch did pretty well with appearance & atmosphere, as I recall, but seems not to have grasped the book’s principal themes, and included pointless & distracting elements of his own invention. There was a (British? PBS?) TV mini-series a few years ago that was much truer to the book. IMO Dune itself is a masterpiece, but the sequelæ fall progressively shorter of the standard it set. I gave up on the series somewhere around the fourth or fifth book. |
