As can be seen from the message below, an error is occurring on line 107. This is happening very very frequently, but does not stop validation and granting of credit.
What is happening?
Should the application be amended?

Message 498050 - Posted: 5 Jan 2007, 21:35:11 UTC

On inspecting several of my results returned, all of them seem to have this mysterious -5000 error. So, is it a problem with BOINC version 5.8.0? As I said, it seems not to affect result validation and credit grants, but it would be interesting to know why it is happening.

You might want to report that error on the BOINC message boards. All I can say that I’ve never seen it with BOINC 5.4.9; I haven’t been brave enough to try a pre-release version myself.

So, there must be something wrong with my computers, I suppose? If so, what could it be?

Now upgraded to Version 5.8.2 and still with the same error.
Can anyone let me know what is happening and what cure might be available?
Surely someone knows? Details follow:-

It would appear that this "-5000" message is created in version 5.1.3.
I viewed "seti_enhanced-ppc-v7.1-g4-nographics" by opening in TextEdit.
I assume this text will be identical to the original version 5.1.3, as all report the same "-5000" message.

About 2/3rds way through this there appears:-

"Exiting..."

Immediately following this, it would appear to create the message that is reported.
Following this there are about a dozen appearances of "icon" in the code.
Surely, one (or more) of these require amendment to stop the annoying "-5000" message.
I am not sufficiently capable of giving further help in this respect. Hopefully another may be able to help?

A little different, but what does it mean (found it under pending credit)??? I've been having trouble with the screensaver acting properly... it seems to do about an hour and 15 min of work, then stops - never really getting anywhere. The problem happens on two of my Macs. Any idea on how to fix this??? Thx.

If you’re asking about the last part, that shows that the WU was ‘noisy’; you’ll probably find that the other hosts’ results contain similar messages. These “–9 overflow” WUs take anywhere from a few seconds to just short of the usual time and, not being considered in error, are credited accordingly. They seem to have become quite a bit more common over the past couple of months than they used to be; the data tapes we’ve been analyzing are from ‘the bottom of the barrel’.

Sorry, I have my screensaver set to go to a blank screen after one minute, so I haven’t seen anything like that. But you’re certainly not the first to report issues with it. All I can suggest is to make sure that your energy-saving settings don’t let the CPU go to sleep; this is known to confuse BOINC, and it doesn’t restart the apps properly. In general, if a task seems to get stuck, quitting and relaunching BOINC will usually get it going again.

I have been getting the -5000 error response as well. I'm running 5.8.8 but that's the only error I've seen and I'm still granted credit for the uploaded work.

I was running BOINC 5.4.9 and I just switched to 5.8.11. Prior to the switch I never saw a -5000 message. My first completed WU on 5.8.11 has -5000's. http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=476448747 is my WU that has -5000's.

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=476021672 is the last WU on 5.4.9

Other than the MACOSX error -5000's, I don't see any show stoppers. I just hope I am not spitting out junk results now.

stderrgui.txt says problems with icons. My -5000 error seems to be on an mac_icon.c file line 107. Any relation?

I noticed the stalling with BOINC on my Macs is when the very first SETI Enhanced downloaded onto my Quicksilver because I was sitting here when the first one happened. Too much of a variance to be just a coincidence. FYI.

I just went back to BOINC 5.4.9. I'm glad I saved the install folder and stuff. Too many wierd issues with 5.8.11 on my iMac. 5.4.9 gave me no trouble before, I hope I can get back to the no problem days.

I notice that boinc (client) runs as user = my admin account under 5.4.9, but under 5.8.11 I am pretty sure it ran under user = BOINC_MANAGER. Just an observation. I run the client as a daemon.

I don't like computer problems that I have no clue on how to address/fix. Talk about a helpless feeling.

Eric
I've a shrewd suspicion that the "stalling" you experienced might have been the one minute pause in "suspended" state of the "Tasks" on loading a 5.8xx version.
This suspended state, it appears, is due to the cpu benchmarks are being run.

All of the -5000 messages, which I am still getting on every result, appear as follows:

MacOS Error -5000 occured in /Users/alexkan/seti/boinc/api/mac_icon.C line 107

How is it that a User is "alexkan"? There is no "alexkan" in my Users folder.
Could it be that this is what is causing the error message?
If not, where is this folder "/Users/alexkan/"?
I wondered whether this line 107 might have been included in the original prototype app by Alex Kan (and was error free running on his own Mac with him as user), but not amended for users on other computers?

Anyone got any ideas?

I am repeating (for convenience) the most informative post on this thread regarding the -5000 error:

You must be using one of Alex Kan's optimized apps. I don't think the error is refering to any directory on your machine; it is just a reference to a source code file that Alex used to build the executable file that you are running under BOINC. I am pretty sure mac_icon.C is a source file that contains a C program.

I get the same line in my results now. Before I installed Alex's app, I had the -5000 errors but alexkan was not on the error line.

Hopefully that will be useful information for Alex Kan for his next(?) version.

My goodness, this has been going on since January?! I've just installed the latest BOINC version on my brand new Mac Mini (it arrived earlier today) and I can see that MacOS Error -5000 message in the first 2 results it produced. I do hope that l'll ol' Mac isn't working up a sweat for nothing...

It has no effect on crunching or the validity of the results; the only harm it does is creating a little clutter in log files, communication & databases. (Little for any one user, but for the project it must add up to quite a lot, even considering that less than 5% of hosts are Macs.)
