Reckon I should submit my resume? But unfortunately, I'm a unix System Administrator, not a developer. Don't the Seti Servers use some form of Unix? I think they could use you! |

Reckon I should submit my resume? But unfortunately, I'm a unix System Administrator, not a developer. Most of them probably run Solaris. Most of my servers at work (55 of them) run Solaris 8 or 9. Havn't tinkered much with Solaris 10 yet as we don't have that accredited for our systems yet. |

He's busy with exams the next week (yes, he also has classes and students!) and the 5.18 is about to be launched over at Beta, but he will look into all the suggestions, he has got so far. Actually not. No, I'm not kissing his behind and I don't drink his bathwater, but it was pretty clear to all here, how I felt about the project and it's administration back when the moderators were biased and the admin to look after them seemed to be for sale, and how I percieved the project in general stating that I would never lift one finger for it again. But then came Eric. His mature and nice way of addressing people and his integrity won me back, his responses to me were nice and polite, and he did respond! So when Pappa asked me to join in actively in the donation drive, and I asked Eric about how bad things were and he gave me an honest answer, I decided to enter, and I am working on different things right now. And I'll be happy to help out with the scientific analysis of the returned WU's and I'm looking forward to receive that material Eric will send me, to take a look at it and see if I'm able to help out. And pedestals are not good to sit on, they are very easy to fall down from. ;-) "I'm trying to maintain a shred of dignity in this world." - Me |

I still think what we'd also need would be some press coverage for SAH, some reports in TV science shows and such and spread the word that SAH needs help. I guess most people here are rather technically oriented, but aren't there people with some press contacts at work or their friends? If not maybe a promo-mail-to-your-favourite-science-mag-action could do the job? I really can't see why a project like SAH is not worth a 10 minute report and we might even see the SAH crew and infrastructure@work ;) In return there will hopefully be new members, more donations and maybe even the magazines might support SAH with a donation. What does the rest think? |

Thank you. You left out a decisive part of my statement, so I'll put it back for you. :-) And my statement is so true. "I'm trying to maintain a shred of dignity in this world." - Me |

Enigma, as far as I can grab from the responses of the team they got it and try to implement it. But the real problem is what to do now if they don't have the funding to keep the service up AND do the improvements fast. Thanks for the response MAC, point taken. I am not trying to harp (but i probably sound like that now) so i will pipe down (on the points i have raised). I believe have more than made my point clear, and i think the members are now looking for more creative ways of raising captial (human and $) for the project to progress and 'stay alive' at the same time. As for me, well i am not a coder (i only dabble). I'm a Network guy... (CISCO data comms), so i may not be able to contribute technically. However i will talk to my team and get a "SETI NEEDS HELP LOGO" on our home page linking back to the SETI@HOME donations URL. In fact if we could get EVERY TEAM to plaster a SETI NEEDS HELP logo on their homepage it would certainly raise awareness as many crunchers may not visit the forums or read the stickies.... Just a thought. Is there any way to target team captains?? |

Just a thought. Is there any way to target team captains?? I had mentioned this early on as Eric has access to the Team Captain email addresses. It would be on him to come up with a suitable introduction to the problem. Discussions here and what everyone preceives as issues has shown a lot. The fact that "we" can discuss them and reach an understanding shows even more. So as other things are being talked about in the background and Eric is open to suggestions the Seti Staff is being very open minded... Pappa Please consider a Donation to the Seti Project. |

Bleh, Enigma - now you got me :p I thought I would just make a donation, point out some stuff and let other's do the work. But I feel stupid seeing you guys are actually on it - so I at least sent a mail to my favourite science TV-mag "nano" with the suggestion to make a report about Seti@home (also mentioning the trouble SaH is in and the laptop tracking) and the request to at least forward the mail to the editorial staff of other magazines if they are not able to make a report. What it takes now would be that other people do so in their countries. I hope this is ok with you, Eric? I would like to add you as contact - sending you a mail right now and holding back the mail to the mag until I get your confirmation. Checklist: Germany nano http://www.3sat.de/nano |

I'm going to get cut down for this...but, I believe SETI has currently stalled in it's search. We have analysed the sky over Arecibo to death now. The multi-beam receiver, which is a great advancement, is still only looking at the same piece of sky. What's next for this, the largest of projects? Bit analysis is great due to it's increased sensitivity, but what's next? I for one cannot donate either money or cpu time to a project that has no public plan. Is data from the southern hemisphere going to be added to the mix? The promise of BOINC had in it a plan to use the data from the southern hemisphere. What is holding it up? Is the quality of data not suitable for SETI@home's needs? Is the analysis being done on site at Parkes all that is required? What's the next step? What's the plan? Live long and BOINC. Paul (S@H1 8888) And proud of it! |

Our donation Stars are supposed to be good for a year. Mine has disappeared and it hasn't been a year since my last donation....... has something changed? 100th Post BTW... |

Suggestion/Idea: It was mentioned in another thread about canvassing your team for donations.... I submit that we also provide a mechanism by which individual TEAMS get a green star..not just individuals... Also, a mechanism by which one of my team members could donate on 'behalf' of my team...so the TEAM would get the credit for the donation and not the individual. Also, the team founder could make it optional to show/hide the AMOUNT the team has donated? Could this perhaps stir up some more friendly team competition? maybe we could even expand that to include a GOLD start to the top 10 donating teams, a red start for the top 100 and a green star for the team that has at least donated...? Thoughts anyone? Negative/positive responses welcome. (Cross posted) |

Yes, a donation list for individuals (who should be able to stay anonymous if they want, though) and teams would be a great idea. There could even be a third category - companies. I wouldn't be surprised if companies like Dell, Alienware, Cisco, whatever would love to donate some money to stay on top of that list (which could be on the left side, leaving space for ad banners on the right). If a student manages to generate over a million dollars from his "million dollar homepage" I don't see how a strong community could fail in raising the missing 300k $ with at least some effort. |

This is my thought too, and I have suggested it to admin. If ads can cover at least the common expenses, then donations from the users can be used for something more project specific, such as a second multibeamer for the southern hemisphere and new servers. Heh, I really think alienware ads here would not only be funny as hell, but also profitable for both sides ;) No one working for alienware here on this boards that could arrange something in case Eric/team give their ok? ------- Ok, have sent the mail to the "nano" editorial staff, will keep you updated if I get any response. To be successfull we need a multiplyer - any people from all over the world up to mail to their favourite science mag, too? Or even better people with personal contacts to the editorial staff of a science mag or newspaper with a science page or something similar? It would be probably a good idea to ask the editorial staffs the mails are sent to, to forward them to other editorial staffs. And it would be helpful to know about the missing notebook, this would for sure also generate some press coverage. Really wondering how much power a community has, are we able to achieve something together? |
