There're loads of WU's to get at LHC at the moment, so open up your floodgates in case you have closed them.

Does LHC@Home have optimized applications?

Short and sweet: No.

They only allow their stock app over there, the calculations need to be very accurate, that's why it's not open source.

The calculations are used to predict a particle's way through the cyclotron, and since it's high energy physics they're dealing with at Cern, a particle in the wrong lane will cause a little more than a hole in the wall, if you get my meaning. ;-) A good part of the corners of France and Switzerland could be wiped out...

I've preempted my Seti data collection on Simon's new app to load up as much as possible on LHC. I figure, seti will allways be around (well, maybe not always, but you get the point).

I did the same thing, suspended all other projects and running as much LHC as I can. :-)

I usually had LHC suspended, but when I found out they planned to work again, I resumed it, and even it has given me a lot of messages in my log, I had my gate open for them, and now my long term debt is keeping me with LHC WU's till they run out.

Yay! :-D

Update:

Up, 18193 workunits to crunch
48728 workunits in progress
47 concurrent connections

For those who have downloaded a lot of LHC WU's, be prepared to see your RAC drop because of this, because they don't export xml stats at LHC, haven't done for a while and nobody can say when they will start doing it again.

Take a look at this thread: http://lhcathome.cern.ch/forum_thread.php?id=2276

And there's a bug over there which makes multiple instances of your hosts, so it's a good idea have them merged. See this thread: http://lhcathome.cern.ch/forum_thread.php?id=2273

Current status:

Up, 14530 workunits to crunch
49523 workunits in progress
40 concurrent connections

But again, be prepared to only see your stats on your result page and in your BOINC manager, you won't see them in your sig for an unknown time.

First and formost, Hiya, Fuzz.

Shouldn't users crunch first and then merge hosts once the credits start rolling in? Or is LHC getting overwhelmed with new hosts?

I don't "do" LHC (no PowerPC), so I dunno what's going on there...

Hiya NA and hb for what's left of it.

It doesn't matter when you merge. I have just (again) merged about 300 hosts and there's nothing to see on my result page http://lhcathome.cern.ch/results.php?userid=6547

And as you can see, it has already generated 3 extra hosts, because I have updated my account since I merged. http://lhcathome.cern.ch/show_user.php?userid=6547

They don't have a Mac app over there, so unless you have a Windows computer hidden somewhere on your desk, it's in vain. http://lhcathome.cern.ch/forum_thread.php?id=2355

Sadly it's only one, I think I've had about 1500 ghosts of my computer. I don't know how many actually, I haven't bothered to count how many there's on one page, I only click "select all" and do that until they all are merged.

I have merged many times.

And, gone:

Server Status

Up, out of work
40381 workunits in progress
46 concurrent connections

And check your computers and have all the ghost computers merged. I have 14 now already, and a new one is generated every time my client is connecting to the database, which is pretty often seen from the log.

And again, they don't export xml stats and can't say when they'll start doing again.

From their main site:

22.11.2006 13:21 UTC
More news on LHC@home server support: it is currently planned to have the migration to Queen Mary College effective in January 2007. Until then, very little admin effort is available and work units will be available from the project only intermittently.

Hey Fuzzy,
I had the same problem with ghost computers several months ago and corrected it by using the following instructions.
"I figured out what the problem is, at least in my case and how to correct it. This may work for you too. In my case the computer host ID # is not getting passed to the client.

1) You can verify that this is your problem too by checking your client_state.xml file. Look for the section for LHCathome then find the line that states the <hostid>xxxxxx</hostid>. If you have value of 0 for the ID# then this is what causes it to keep making new hosts. Now exit the text editor without saving!
2) If you want to fix this shut down Boinc.
3) Go to your account page here at the project and click on View computers then write down the host number from the most recent one there.
4) Go back and open client_state.xml.file with a text editor and replace the 0 with the number that you wrote down.
5) Save the file.
6) Restart Boinc
Hope this helps!

Thanks Peter. :-)

I checked the hostid and yes, it was 0, so I edited the client_state.xml with the number of my computer over there, and lo and behold, I still have only one computer over there, no new ghost hosts have been generated.

Have you posted this fix to that bug on the board over there? If not then I think you should, because this is really genius.

So now I have a RAC on 204.56 over there because of the merged computers! LOL It's only sad they don't export the stats. ;-D

Unfortunately, I have a bunch of computers where the host ID is NOT 0, and they still generate excess computers.

Hmmm... Weird. I just checked my computer and I still only have one computer, but I now have a ghost WU. :-/

Maybe time to set to No New Work? At least we know that nothing will happen over there until after they have moved to Queen Mary's.
