It would be fine, but I have just signed up to GR, only not connected my lonesome puter to it, it stays with BAM!. How will my stats be counted? For BAM!? For GR? For both?
Good point, let me expand a bit there...

A user can be registered to a project but no signle machine attached - in order to participate in fora discussion for example. I would say such a user should be counted as registered but he/she doesn't count in machine totals, nor machine active.

In a similar way, a user can register on AMS (and be counted as AMS user) but no machine using AMS. Some numbers apply.
Yes, a user can be sign-ed for different AMSes...and I expect so - testers will attach some hosts to let's says GR, some host to BAM!, some will be left without any AMS.
A user registered on AMS is a user of particular AMS project.
Host totals counts host actually attached via AMS - in a way that UBT - Halifax--lad proposed for example.

This should provide quite accurate and valid numbers for any AMS out there.

so here are some alternatives for the home page:

(all numbers on these screenshots are arbitrary)

01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06.

I'd go for number 4. What about 'Supporting BOINC'?

in my view, there are two issues here,

one issue is what data should be shown on a stats page, where we break down in detail information about projects, teams, users, etc.

a separate issue, in my view, is what information do we show on the home page, which is our "quick pitch" to get users to join. the home page must be simple; it must pare down to essentials; it must not overcomplicate.

note that the objectives of the two pages differ.

the objective of the stats page is the same as the objective of boincstats or other stat sites. it is an information resource (or: it should be an information resource, when complete). in this context many of your points are well taken.

the objective of the home page, however, is to convince users to join-- not just GR but the BOINC platform. as i have suggested i think it is vital to show in some fashion the aggregate number of users on the platform (or at least those parts of the platform available through us): this is the relevant and essential data for a user who wonders "is this safe?" at the same time, please consider that to a newbie an attempt to explain the difference between BOINC and a BOINC AMS is exactly the kind of thing we seek to avoid on the home page. So for instance, showing "Total BOINC users" and also "Total GR users" is, imho, to be avoided on the home page-- though such a distinction might make sense on a stats page.

so before we get into how a proper stats page or stats site ought to look, i first want to resolve the issue of the home page.

so i wonder: does anyone object to the formulation shown on 5: here we say "these are project stats" and we also say "all projects are independently managed."

Matt,

Personally, I like number 4, but that's beside the point.

I think what everyone here is overlooking is that GR is first and foremost an AMS site. Willy's site is first and foremost a Stats site, with an AMS as a secondary function.

GR belongs to you, and only you. You need to put your foot down and make your OWN decisions about your site. It's all well and good to seek input and listen to the user community (and I think you should...), but the final decision on how you set up and run your site is your's alone...not a committee decision. Remember the (OLD) joke about how a Camel is a horse designed by a committee? I don't think you need to be moving in that direction. You're breaking new ground and have come in for a lot of unwarranted (to a certain extent) criticism because of it. Keep on keeping on, and best of luck to you!

Just make sure you display all BOINCX users and all GR users, it looks quite misleading otherwise

I also favour number "4" and secondly "1" & "2".

Avoid big ("official sounding") words! It scares a surprising number of people. Hence "6" gets a 'no'.

Aside: There's a few pubs and clubs here in the UK that have jumped onto a psuedo mocking "Russian Revolution" theme for their image. Seems to be popular for at least one large part of the population.

Regarding this "revolution" theme (and it's perception in the USA and elsewhere):
Is it possible to have a different theme for different countries? So that the mostly rightwing USA can have a more subdued theme, while the rest of the world can have this more catchy one?

let me say also that i'll remove the word "citizens" from the various charts and use instead "users" since you are right that "citizens" much more strongly suggests association to GR, whereas "users" will take its meaning from whatever the context suggests.

"Participant" is usually used instead of "user" at most BOINC projects.

"Powered by BOINC" seems to be the standard phrase at most projects.

Re the "changes which i think will satisfy all":

Even if you manage that for those of us motivated to post on this thread, there will always be other dissenters whom then pop up.

Having something a little 'different' should be good, even if a few people's egos get ruffled. My view is that it is important to keep the theming understandable and the wording both accurate and understandable. Also, the "Grid Republic" theme should appeal to a younger generation worldwide whom are not too close to the days of the worst of Communism.

Alternative account manager sites can cater for other tastes...

(Make your site "skinnable" for different themes?!)

Martin

I read :
'Our network of millions of volunteers will create a resource larger than any existing supercomputer.'
You don't think that 'our network of millions of volunters' is a little excessive ??

no, i really don't. (1) the above quoted text is in a section with the headline "our goals", (2) it is in the future tense, (3) it is a much higher number than the boinc platform or any other distributed computing platform at present. so i really don't see much of an issue on this point. it is a statement of aspiration.

i'm currently on my way to the Boinc Workshop, so if anyone in this discussion who is there has any further thoughts on this or other issues discussed in this thread, please let me know in person.

one question to Matt: How was Geneva?

the conference was great. it was really nice to meet a lot of cool people doing cool things-- a lot of the project developers were there, and it renewed my amazement at the work being done.

ideas for the future of boinc were also discussed; i look forward to the upcoming year.

best wishes,

...matt
