Countdown

Cars: Positions

Can Tom Kristensen and Audi do it again?

Audi set for what would an historic victory

The bet is a daring one: to win the ’24 Heures du Mans', with a diesel engine. Audi have being preparing to do it since 2002. Although everyone knows of the extreme demands of such a competition, the two Audis have already proved that they have the speed taking the front row of the grid.

Nothing less than victory… is the objective Audi has set itself for this year’s race. This could seem insignificant; only, they are powered by V12 TDIs. If the objective is still far from being fulfilled, when taking into consideration the fact the ‘24 Heures’ is a race riddled with difficulty, the N°7 and the N°8 cars have proved yesterday they can be quick when they want to be. Pole setter, ‘Dindo’ Capello is happy to have set the fastest time for his team who has worked very hard, especially after his off on Wednesday evening: “I am very proud of this pole, the 3rd of my career in Le Mans. The last time was back in 2002, and I believed I had become slower with age, so I am happy to have proved myself wrong!”

His seven times Le Mans winning team-mate, Tom Kristensen, is confident and full of enthusiasm: “I never become tired of this race. Each year there is a new challenge that I approach with excitement. Apart from taking pole position thanks to ‘Dindo’, I am satisfied with the driveability of my R10 DTI.”

Dr Wolfgang Ullrich, Audi team manager, is not getting carried away: “we know the task will be difficult because we know Le Mans, its risks, but also our competitors will be very difficult to beat.”

With their 5.5 litre engines providing a maximum power of 650 horse power with a torque of more than 1 100 Newton Metres, the two teams hope to complete one or even two laps more than with the R8. All will become clear tomorrow.

And who is Fuzzy rooting for?

Are you kidding? :-D

Audi no. 7 with

Rinaldo ("Dindo") CAPELLO

Allan MC NISH

and

Tom Kristensen

Tom Kristensen (race driver)

Tom Kristensen (born 1967-07-07 in Hobro) is a Danish racing driver. He has won many championships in auto racing but his most famous achievement is being the first person to win the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans seven times, six of which have been consecutive. In 1997, he won the race with the TWR Porsche team.

In 2000, 2001, and 2002 he won the race with the powerful Audi R8 along with Frank Biela and Emanuele Pirro, becoming the first three drivers since Jacky Ickx in 1977 to win the race on three straight occasions. In 2003, he won the race with Bentley. In 2004, he equaled Ickx's record of six Le Mans victories in Team Goh's Audi R8. 2005 saw Kristensen win a record seventh time with an American R8 entry. The last three titles have been with new teammates each time.

Tom's career began in 1984, winning several karting titles. He raced in Japan in the early 90s, concurrently in Fomula 3 and Touring Cars. He was Japanese Formula 3 champion in 1993, and runner-up in JTCC in 1992 and 1994. He was 6th in Formula 3000 in both 1996 and 1997, and test driver for Tyrrell in their final Formula One season in 1998, and for Michelin as they prepared their F1 tyres using an older Williams car in 2000. He was 3rd in the STW Cup in Germany in 1999, 7th in the British Touring Car Championship in 2000, and winner of the Sebring 12-hour race in both those years.

Oh god I'm feeling old. Fuzzy said, "Tom's career began in 1984, winning several karting titles."

He started in motorsport about the same time I gave it up! Let's see, I started driving 5 Litre V8's in 1964 at age 9. Switch to rallying and a Mk II Cortina in 1973 (wore that out). Built a new Mk I Cortina, blew that up. Built a new Escort from scratch (thanyou Ford Special Works :-) and retired several years latter, with car still intact in 1985 or 6. Damn! I am old ;-)

I should have kept the car and retired the wife!!!!!!!!! a.k.a. mortgauge.....

I miss my Ford Escort Mk II :-( It had wings 8-) One day I'll scan a photo..

LOL

I doubt it's one of those that they have placed in those racecars. :-D

Do you have a pic of the diesel engines they use in those?

But never mind, McNish is in the lead in Audi 7 just a few seconds before Audi 8 with Biela. :-D

Go, Audi, go!

Thanks John. :-)

Yes, I guess it's kind of modified compared to that diesel motor that's usually in a car. ;-D

But a fine little piece of mechanics I must say. :-D

EDIT: And McNish is still in the lead in Audi 7 with a 20 seconds gap down to Biela in Audi 8. :-D

And the GT1 in the the lead is Corvette 64 where Jan Magnussen, last years winner in the GT1 class, is one of the drivers. Right now Beretta is driving.

You can watch the race live on Sky channel 413.

The 2 Audi R10s still hold 1 and 2 even after a tyre, fuel and driver change ... 22 hours to go!

Audi 7 was more than 20 minutes in pit, so Audi 8 is now in the lead with Pescarolo 16 and Pescarolo 17 on the 2'nd and 3'rd place.

Pirro is driving Audi 8 right now, and things seems very fine for Marco Werner, co-driver on Audi 7, who won last year together with Tom Kristensen and JJ Lehto.

But Tom Kristensen is now driving Audi 7 and he's driving fast, so he has advanced two places from place no. 14 to 12 since he drove out from the pit. And things can change a lot through the night, and there're still 19 hours to go. Everything can happen in Le Mans.

Jan Magnussen, last years winner in GT1, is driving right now, and he's still in the lead of the GT1 class and is no. 9 in the race.

You can see the results, which are being updated constantly, here:

http://www.lemans.org/24heuresdumans/live/pages/chronos_gb.html

EDIT: Latest update: Tom Kristensen in Audi 7 is now the fastest driver on the course, and he has just advanced to no. 8.

Audi Car 8 had to go back in to the pits a second time to repair a misfire, which turned out to be a duff injector.

I wa lying 7th when I looked 15 minuted ago, and climbing.

Car 7 is as Fuzzy states ... 1st.

Keep it up Audi TDI power!

No, Audi 8 is 1'st, and Audi 7 is on the 5'th place but about 6 lapses after Audi 8, but McNish, who's driving Audi 7 right now is the fastest driver on the course, and a lot can happen through the night. Both Kristensen and McNish are very fast drivers at nights, but we must not forget that all drivers in Audi 8, Biela, Pirro, and Werner are very good drivers also.

But what I find so intriguing about a race like Le Mans is that everything can happen, the race hasn't ended and no car has won before the checkered flag has waved. Even a car has been in the lead for 23 hours and 45 minutes, a flat tire or one little fail in the electrical system can ruin everything.

But if Tom Kristensen can't winn I definitely root for Audi 8 with Marco Werner, who won last year.

Go Audi, go!

Again, check out the results on http://www.lemans.org/24heuresdumans/live/pages/chronos_gb.html

Is this happening now at the same time as Le Mans? That was dumb. :-(

Anyway, Audi 7 is up on a 4'th place, Pescarolo 16 is still in pit with severe problems, so they are after Racing for Holland 14 and Pescarolo 17 and now 5 laps up to Audi 8.

Again, everything can happen. The race has still 16 hours and 45 minutes to go.

The Audi R10 number 8 is still numero uno, and has a 4 lap lead over the Pescarolo.

The Audi number 7 car had closed the gap to 2 laps behing the race number 2. But it is currently in the garge of the pit stop for something major.

I came up to bed just as Sky channel 413 showed the Audi new driver entering the car. So, I am assuming the problem with AUui's car 7 is sorted and they are about to rejoin the race.

Still 13 hours to go, so, if number 7 repeated it's earlier performance (race place 14 to 3). Then there is all still to play for, providing reliability remains with Audi's car 7.

I will see what the state of play is in the late morning!
