I installed a blnak new boinc 5.4.9 manager on WinXP.
I used default install directory as suggested.
I used recommended single user installtion.
I don't use proxy (NTLM authentication problem...)

After installation boinc is starting automatically

but - it can't connect to localhost.
- no host + no password + return nor
- localhost + no password + return does change anything

- the same 9mb of boinc 5.4.9 I could install on other pcs, even XP with crunch3r optimized clients!

any advice?
mannnnny thanks
Georg

PS I run seti since 1999 - and from version to version software need more support. with boinc its no fun anymore

Boinc 5.4.9 is now using port 31416 only to communicate internally. So you need to allow your firewall software to have Boinc.exe and Boincmgr.exe to communicate on port 31416 TCP.

Work around:
Exit BOINC.
Make sure that the BOINC directory has a file called gui_rpc_auth.cfg.
You can open that file with Notepad. (if not present, make it.)
Then take out the randomly made 32 character hexadecimal key.
Add your own password (6 characters minimum).
Save the file as ASCII code (or all files), so it doesn't add .txt at the end.
Restart Boinc Manager.
See if it starts by itself, if not and you get the error again, go Advanced, Select Computer, add localhost in the host ID box and your password in the password box. Then click OK. Don't use Enter, that may not always work.

TCP/UDP for boinc.exe, boinccmd.exe, boincmgr.exe in/out on port 31416 allowed:
no change of situation
even shutoff the firewall + restart of PC
click OK, don't use Enter: no change of situation

gui_rpc_auth.cfg in C:\\programme\\boinc (german Win default for program files in english version) created, not as txt saved - password + return ...
no change of situation

with regards,
Georg

Ok... then try a full system power down.
wait a couple of seconds.
then reboot.

If that still doesn't fix it, try either a repair install of BOINC (through add.remove programs), or uninstall BOINC and reinstall as a service. You will need an administrator account with password for the latter.

... its not my first reinstall...
... full power down - will try it
... installation as service - will try it

meanwhile I exchanged my firewall (trend micro) with Zone Alarm. Here I get asked if I allow communication on port 3146 - after saying yes I got one step further: no more can't connect to localhost, but now I get "wrong password". I tried copying remote_hosts.cfg and gui_rpc_auth.cfg from working boinc 5.2.13 pc (same subnet): NO Change of situation.

many thanks for your answers.
I'll come back tomorrow with feedback.
with regards,
Georg

Message 351032 - Posted: 28 Jun 2006, 15:11:25 UTC - in response to Message 315652.

I've just tried to instal Boinc5.4.9 onto a laptop (having successfully insatlled several desktops) and for some reason keep getting the dreaded unable to connect message stated in this thread.

I think I have been through everything mentioned (allowing ports, switching off firewalls, changing passwords, manually starting files) and none of it helps. The one thing I did notice was that when I started boinc.exe manually (in dos window) I got pages of "GUI RPC failed to create socket: -1" and after a few minutes it terminates.

Anyone got any new advice/hints for this?

Ageless, am running WinXP with SP2.

For some extra info, I ripped everything out and installed it fresh on this machine last night (same reasult) and another laptop - which worked fine. I guess there must be a software conflict or (possibly) yet another firewall layer on the non-playing machine. I'll keep poking around and see if I can find anything...

To properly start up Boinc you start up Boincmgr.exe when you have BOINC installed as a single or multi user installment. Boinc.exe is just the daemon. It may run fine on its own under Win9x/ME systems, but not so fine under NT/2k/XP systems.

If you want to start Boinc.exe there, install BOINC as a service.

Fair enough. I only tried this as it was mentioned in one of the old threads regarding the same problem with earlier boinc versions. I'll have a further play with (other) software tonight and see if I can identify the conflict that must be there.

Since BOINC 5.4.9, upon startup, BOINC sends an RPC out to the firewall. This RPC tells the firewall that there is a screen saver option attached to BOINC which it should allow to kick in. We thought we had this tested 100% in alpha testing and working on all machines, but apparently there's still something broken. Some machines won't let go of the screen saver, others won't react to the RPC (the firewall should give a warning) and others may see the same effect you do.

Hopefully this is fixed in a future version. 5.4.10 or .11
