I just upgraded to the most recent version of Bonic (5.4.9) and I can not get bonic client to work. I have tried everything covered in the message board. I even tried to reload the old bonic version. Nothing seems to work. I am running windows XP. My system will not start the client or allow me to attach to any project. I have check all the ports and there do not appear to be any conflicts. I have multiple systems and on the XP systems are affected. What is being done to fix this?

How did you install it? Did you uninstall 5.2.13 first?
If you just install over 5.2.13, or uninstall 5.2.13 first and leave the BOINC folder alone, you don't have to re-attach to any project.

So please explain in some more detail what you did and what is happening now when you try to start up BOINC.

I installed over the old Bonic. Since that I have not been able to get either version to operate. I have looked at the port usage question in Previous post and this is not the problem. I have tried to install the old version and it gives the same problem. Bonic Manager cannot connect to the hoist. I have checked my firewall. I have checked for any conflict. I have tried to start the client manually. When I do this it just shuts back down after a few seconds. I have researched the problem on both the seti site and the bonic site. I have tried all of the solutions listed in previous postings by other users.

I am not a novice user. I have two Engineering Degrees. One in Electrical and One in Computer, I specialized in Microprocessor Design amd Microprocessor based digital control systems. I have tried every solution that I know. I think that it is time we all switch to LINUX, as most problems I experience are the result of some off the wall approach by Microsoft.

I would grateful for any help, as I know a team is always better than just one person working on a problem. Maybe you know something that I have missed.

Have you tried to uninstall BOINC completely (through Add/Remove Programs), but leave the BOINC directory intact. Then a reboot of the computer, to then reinstall the new BOINC version as a service install (needs administrator account with password) and see what that does?

I have tried to uninstall bonic and then reinstall as described with no results. Each time I get the same problem. This happens no matter which version I use or how I uninstal and reinstall.I have used Bonic for months with no problems, until I tried to upgrade to the lated version. Has anyone else reported a problem with the new version?

Thanks for the suggestions, even if we have not yet found a solution.

Have you been doing reboots betweem uninstall and reinstall? A cold restart also sometimes can clear a problem with connecting to localhost.

Also version 5.4.9 use port 31416 instead of port 1043 that the older versions used for local communication between boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe

The only known major bug in 5.4.9 involves problems using proxy servers that use NTLM authentication.
