WHY AM I CRUNCHING SOME DATA FROM 1999 INSTEAD OF NEW 2006 WORK |

because they were downloaded to your machine LOL Seriously, they don't do the tapes in order. They used to "pre-scan" the tapes and select the ones that didn't contain much noise. The ones with noise they "tossed in a box" (put on a shelf). Now they are going through those and have been for about a year. Also, I think the data recorder broke and has recently been fixed/replaced, and I'm not sure they have any 2006 data to crunch. They are NOT crunching data that has already been crunched if that's your worry. tony |

Another thing to think about is the signal that we find might be tens of thousands of years old, what is 5-10 more going to hurt? My movie https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/502242 |

louchio Welcome to Seti BOINC, as you also carry the Volunteer Tester Tag. You know that almost everything that was done could be New Again! What I suspect is that as analysis is done, selected "time frames" will be revisited... Mostly as Tony Said they are working through the tapes on the Shelf and waiting for the new recorder to go online... It is in the works... Matt stated, they were running low on tapes that have not been split yet... That is part of the silly Donations problem. While I can not get a confirmation, the work currently being done in Seti Enhanced Beta (part of Seti@home II) is also being stored in the Master Science Database... Yes I know that I am pushing... Grin... WHY AM I CRUNCHING SOME DATA FROM 1999 INSTEAD OF NEW 2006 WORK Pappa Please consider a Donation to the Seti Project. |

Another thing to think about is the signal that we find might be tens of thousands of years old, what is 5-10 more going to hurt? This has been said several times before (including by me). But of course it isn't true. Signals from more than a few 10s of light-years away are too week to detect with present technology - even SETI Enhanced will only increse the detection range by perhaps 2. As it's radio waves, travelling at the speed of light, any signal we detect sent from a few light-decades away will have been sent no longer ago than those few decades. Never the less, we're not seaching for transmitting objects perhaps transiting our solar system in weeks or months then gone forever. Any recorded data is therefore good for checking for several decades. |

This is from a Post dated Feb 15th 2006 Some facts: 1. We haven't recorded any new data in about a year. 2. We are now using tapes that have been in the system before, but for some reason or another (broken splitters, database corruption, etc.) they didn't yield very much science, if anything at all. There are about 90 of these tapes. At the current "burn rate" this will last about 6 weeks. With enhanced, a bit longer. 3. We hope to have the new data recorder on line soon. 4. It makes absolutely no scientific difference at all what order we put these tapes into the system. I don't have the time to sort these tapes by date. I'll let the database do all the time sorting for us when all the results are returned. - Matt I guess he found a way to make the tapes last more than 6 weeks since he posted this 10 weeks ago. |
