The reason we all search is clearly because we all realize how arrogant it would be to presume humanity is the only life in this galaxy. Whether or not there is an intelligence able to communicate with us within our current time frame, and within a reasonable communication range is another matter entirely. In the end, we all do it because it is a very important investigation that must be done. But it seems to me that with so many things happening these days...it's like a teenager going downtown - we're in real danger, and it's just unforseeable whether we'll 'get home' safe. We could make contact with some very nasty beings that will be overjoyed to find another planet to raid and subjugate - possibly even through their messgae alone. We could blow ourselves up through our religious zeal. We could wipe ourselves out with terrible biological agents like in 'The Stand'. We could experiment with the wrong type of technology, for energy or for weapons, and wipe ourselves out that way. We could fall into another religion-inspired dark age...
