Please HELP!!

I am VERY frustrated. I own Connecticut Computer and have installed SETI Classic on lots of CPU's with 0 issues. Now I am migrating evreone to BOINC and having tons of issues. the most common (I think on EVERY cpu I have installed it on) I get an incative taskbar of BOINC running. I have been through the documentation (WIKI as well) and can find nothing to assist me. I think the SETI project is outstanding and very important and would like to continue it. Please help

here are the specs

on a min of 20 different machines running windows XP Home edition
All windows Updates done
Clean Build of Windows XP Home (or Pro)
Version 5.2.12
it does not matter if it's the first app installed or the last
Version 4.45 does not seem to have the effect but there are too many other bugs in that version
EVERY cpu installed on has the same effect
Screen Saver is set to blank at 0 minutes and take effect at 10 minutes
Installed as shared and default on all options

Please help I've been up and running for a while

I don't want to give it up but it's getting frustrating. Also been having a lot of issues running on Win98 boxes older pentiums and win ME setup's. But the big issue is the duplicate manager in the taskbar

Thank you in advance

...I get an inactive taskbar of BOINC running.

Run that by me again? Is this in the Windows taskbar, or do you mean you have two Boinc Manager icons in the system tray?

Oh and why not install BOINC as a service? That way you don't need to run any Boinc Manager all the time, the users won't notice it's there (only administrator access to the folder as well), plus it starts way before anyone logs in, while it keeps running when people log out.

Taskbar on is unable to be opened or closed - to close that one you have to open the one in the system tray and then minimise it

I can not install as a service because you can not install without a password or having the password be NULL option

So? You're the administrator, aren't you? Why not setup a password for the admin then?

Well there are a couple of reasons.

1.) I wan't to keep the systems I build with no password on the admin account for the ease of the average user

2.) I would like to set BOINC up as just a regular screen saver with the option of being removes easilly should problems occour

3.) Personal preference

Any ideas what is causing it to happen?
Sure could use a fix here

Thanks again for your help

P.S. I've seen this posted before but couldn't find an answer

You make it sound like there can only be one (Master) Administrator account on a Windows XP system...

Thought of making an additional administrator account?

2.) I would like to set BOINC up as just a regular screen saver with the option of being removes easilly should problems occour

Install as a service and use the trick to get graphics and screen saver back. :)

Any ideas what is causing it to happen?

Time out problem... Is my guess at least. Not knowing the configuration specifics of all the computers involved, it could be anything.

Well I would like to solve the original issue first. But I will also consider and experiment with the service as well. In the mean time here are the specs of MY cpu at the store. Does this help?

File is too big and was trunicated. Can you narrow down infor that would be specific to what you are looking for. My machine was rebuild a few days ago due to a drive crash and I figured I would work the problem out on a clean build

Software installed is minimal

XP Home SP2 all updates (Except .NET 2.0)
Norton Systemworks pro 2005
BOINC Manager 5.2.13 (Shared and default)
Ad-Adaware Pro 1.06
WinZIP 10.0
AIM (Latest)
Java (Latest)
Divx and AC3 Codec (Latest)
Poxio EZ CD Creator (Basic 6.0 with all updates)

That's it I can get versions of everything or e-mail logs and reports if you wish

Ken

Almost forgot

Happens on every re-boot

Ken

I think your point was missed.

If I got this right Boinc shows up on the taskbar when you boot the system. Clicking on it doesn't open the manager. Double clicking on the Tray Icon opens the manager window. X the manager closes manager and removes it from the task bar leaving the Icon in the tray.

This is a bug that's been around for a while, and my understanding was that it was fixed in Ver. 5.2.13

I've now been running an Alpha Ver. (see signature) and I still have to double click the Tray Icon to open the Boinc Manager then X it out to remove it from the taskbar when I reboot my system.

Please confirm if I understood your problem correctly.

Ok, I don't have a real solution for you right now other than install as a service or temporarily revert to 4.45 until this bug is cured. I hesitate to suggest you try one of the newer unreleased versions of the 5.2.x which you can get directly from the dl page, as I have no idea what the Dev are trying to fix in those.

You might consider requesting help on the Number Crunching Board as there are many more people with greater knowledge than me, that monitor that board.

Hi WorWizard,

This happens in my machine as well, but for me is minor issue, since I only have 2 computers (as opposed to yours 30+ machines) and I only reboot them every 15 days or so.

I'm running crunch3r's BOINC 5.2.13 on WinXP SP2. From what I can tell, it doesn't happen every single time I reboot. Sometimes the taskbar button disappears on it own. I think it has something to do with the order in which the applications are loaded at startup, but to be honest I didn't pursued this.

Cheers

At least I know I am not alone. It's just making me nuts. I've even tried it with only WinXP right from the install. No software at all. Same thing. I would love to assist anyone in helping to find a solution to this

Thanks for he tip

It's possible that this little program, DelayRun, may solve your problem. Go to the following site:

http://www.geocities.com/fcueto/Otros/delayrun_en.htm

At other places on the internet I have read that the bad startup behavior is a Windows XP bug with no known solution. I haven't used this program so I can't yet say whether it works.

I found another one that may work to delay your BOINC startup:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/Delayed-Startup-And-Program-Manager.shtml

Or - use this more direct address:

http://www.quantumriftsoftware.com/delayedstartup.phtml

I haven't tried this one either.

Well, I guess it's true: misery loves company :-)

Anyway, I think I found a workaround for you. When you said that it had the same behavior over a clean WinXP install, I started thinking. Bob also provided a clue, stating that this is a known XP bug.

Then I tried the only thing that occurred to me (short of a change in the installation type, there is): to change the way the BOINC client is started. I tried finding some command-line switches for BOINCMGR.EXE. There is a "/s" switch so it will load to the systray only, but its already "on" on the Startup shortcut.

So I changed the properties in the shortcut itself, changing its execution to "Minimized", and it worked! I rebooted my machine a couple of times (cold, warm) and the taskbar button disappeared a few momemnts after initialization.

There is one small side-effect though: the first time you try to call BOINC Mngr by double-clicking the systray, its window will come up from the taskbar, as if it were minimized, even though there is no visible button there, and you'll have to this manually in all of your 30+ computers, and on every new installation.

Maybe you can post a message for the developers to change the Windows installer so it will create a shortcut with the "Minimized" option by default, although this could have deleterious effects on older Windows platforms.

Well, give it a try and let me know if it worked for you as well, ok?

Regards,
Wander

I think I've probably misunderstood the problem and I don't think that delaying the BOINC startup will fix what has been described. I only run BOINC on 1 computer and I never thought much about it when I start it but, yes, the big 'window' is open when I start BOINC (not minimized) and I have to manually close it. BOINC should send a close window message as soon as it starts up but it doesn't. I'm hoping that this will be fixed in the next version. I may play around with my Delphi and write a BOINC starter that starts BOINC and then sends a close window message. I had to laugh when I was thinking about the icon for this program - it would be 'BS'.
