How / Where can I find info about becoming familiar with the UNIX command-line interface. I'm very comfortable with the Windows registery but UNIX / LINUX remains a mystery to me. (I'm soooo CONFUZZED. Both my Parents and I did / do drugs, RX & otherwise.) Also I'm 51 and not likely to change anytime soon ERROR: Could not open the file "/home/jamesl/Desktop/boi…2.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh" gedit was not able to automatically detect the character coding. Please, check that you are not trying to open a binary file and try again selecting a character coding in the 'Open File...' (or 'Open Location') dialog. This is the message I get. I'm STILL Linux DENSE Also posted in NC board I Desire Peace and Justice, Jim Scott (Mod-Ret.) |

I noticed someone minused you, so heres a However, what are you actually asking? The first bit seemed clear enough but line 3 down is a tad mystifying. Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. |

I noticed someone minused you, so heres a When I try to open the self-extracting archive of BOINC, I get the following message. ERROR: Could not open the file "/home/jamesl/Desktop/boi…2.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh" gedit was not able to automatically detect the character coding. Please, check that you are not trying to open a binary file and try again selecting a character coding in the 'Open File...' (or 'Open Location') dialog. And when I try to open/run BOINC in a terminal window it just vanishes or if the manager apears it won't connect to the server (over and over) |

Did you sudo ~/Desktop/./boinc...2.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh? |

I see the minusers are still lurking. I'll let the people who know about linux help you, I don't know anything further than knoppix. Life on earth is the global equivalent of not storing things in the fridge. |

If you post in the Linux Help forums you will get a friendlier and more accurrate response than mine :) The instuctions in NC will also work perfectly. But first try this (if you dare) : open a terminal window and type these commands: cd /home/jamesl/Desktop/ (or wherever the boinc file is) press enter this changes to the directory the file is in sudo chmod +x boinc_4.2.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh press the enter key You will be asked for your password This makes the file executable. then ./boinc_4.2.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh (or whatever the file is called) press the enter key This will extract the boinc files to a BOINC directory on your desktop. Move the BOINC directory to somewhere else in your home directory (/home/jamesl) with your file manager. EDIT: MAJOR mistakes (told him to make desktop executable) EDIT2: looked at NC thread Need help? Check out the excellent Unofficial BOINC-Wiki! 'We are the BOINC. Prepare to be assimilated.' |
