Hi there, is there any reason, why the administrative privileges are required for the Windows installation. It seems, that BOINC client 4.19, was the last one without this requirement. Typically I work for a larger company and the computer administrators does not provide the administration rights to the employes. I understand their reasons very well (less work, precaution) In my opinion such application like BOINC client without HW/OS related special features, should be able to be installed without administrator account. Since BOINC 4.20 there have been big changes in the program, amongst which the way to install it. It's not just a GUI anymore, an all in one program, but a separate BOINC daemon and a separate GUI (the BOINC Manager). These communicate with eachother through TCP listening ports, not only on the local machine but also on the network & internet. So you need the administrative rights to be able to tell that the program parts can comminucate on ports 80, 1043 and 31416. You can also only install it as a single user, multi user or service install. To be able to install it as a service, you need the proper rights automatically. Probably more of a Windows thing than that of BOINC, but still. Furthermore, it's a legality & liability problem. If you do not have the proper permission from your company to run BOINC/Seti on their computers, you are just plainly not allowed to run it. So in a way it's helping you if found out you are illegally using business resources. |
