i've got around 20 results collected in the last 2.5 days so from last night I have 148 waiting over the last 4 days to upload, with the occasional successful upload occuring. However, my cache is being maintained at the rate I would normally expect. So the down load servers are functioning OK. It's good to be back amongst friends and colleagues |

None. <RESET> takes care of the broken uploads/downloads. Yep it sure does - it deletes all your work units! http://www.setiusa.net |

None. <RESET> takes care of the broken uploads/downloads. Yup- and then the server tries to send more - and those fail. and over and over again. |

I have 195 WUs waiting to send right now. How about the rest of you? Lots, but i'm still getting new work every now & then. So i don't see any particular point in people getting all worked up about it. Grant Darwin NT |

Everyone Please, DO NOT RESET Projects! There is a Reason to do that but This Is Not the Reason! The Main Page states that {color=blue]December 9, 2005 We will be extending the deadline for returning results so that the troubles with the result upload handler will not result in lost credit.[/color] This coupled with from the Server Status Page Downloads and Uploads are starting to happen "Faster." just wandering there is system halt happening for days and why the people who participate in the multi projects just suspend their seti and switch to another regular running project to ease the trafic? i mean this is very fine solution by every types of complainers?! if it would make sense for you just please suspend your seti and ease the traffic, while your cpu's take care of other projects. Please, DO NOT RESET Projects! There is a Reason to do that but This Is Not the Reason! Why not? The downloads are broken - none of the ones that failed will ever complete, and will just end up being ghost results that will plague the database for months or years. |

First The folks at Berkeley setup to insure that work will not be lost! In cases like this a "backup" project is a good thing... There are many projects that "may" have something that interests you... Those are linked from the Main Page or can be found Here. I guess the good part is that what grew from the Original Seti Project has grown to include other things that can also help "Mankind." just wandering there is system halt happening for days and why the people who participate in the multi projects just suspend their seti and switch to another regular running project to ease the trafic? i mean this is very fine solution by every types of complainers?! if it would make sense for you just please suspend your seti and ease the traffic, while your cpu's take care of other projects. Why not? The downloads are broken - none of the ones that failed will ever complete, and will just end up being ghost results that will plague the database for months or years. Because "reset" deletes UPLOADS, and WORK IN PROGRESS, and the SCIENCE APPLICATION, and the SUPPORT FILES, not _just_ the "broken downloads". Then BOINC immediately tries to _re-download_ all of these things, which adds considerably to the load on the server. And if someone had three days worth of crunching that was trying to upload, they've just lost all that credit, _and_ the project will have to resend those results to someone else to crunch. Yes, SETI staff fail miserably at cleaning up after outages. We've seen that over and over, with orphan results on disk, orphan results in the database, etc., etc. I just don't see any reason to deliberately make the problem worse. SUSPEND SETI! When everything is flowing again, unsuspend it. That's all you have to do. If you have another project attached, it will run. If not, your CPU will be idle, but at least you aren't adding to the problem. |

Angus The reasons for Reseting a Project do not inclued the download that continues to "Retry"... By doing that you only complicates the issue... That particular workunit was meant to be sent to You! It will get there, if you do not reset the project... Then It can be returned as you have time to complete it... During this time my laptop actually ran out of work and shut itself off... It had not work to do so actaully had time to cool down the hard drive and CPU for the first time in years... As they turned the Upload/Downlaod Servers back on this afternoon... Over a couple of hours it completed all of its waiting downloads... It is Now Happy and working again... Please, DO NOT RESET Projects! There is a Reason to do that but This Is Not the Reason! I would more suspect that the download that you abort because fo the reseting the project would end up as a "ghost." IF you allow it to happen then it will come down, get processed and sent back... Having all those 'downloading' SETI results is screwing up the BOINC CC- refusing to fetch work elsewhere. Another scheduler bug perhaps? |

Ya know, one simple thing to say to all of this is; IF YOU CAN'T BE PATIENT, YOU DON'T WANT TO WAIT UNTIL THINGS CLEAR, THEN DELETE THE WHOLE THING!! Come on here, I've never seen so much whining and complaining. Its frustrating, not only for 1 person, but for the whole damn lot of us. Everyone is feeling the pain here. Many people have quite a lot of computers that are out of work, not uploading. The people at Berkeley are pulling their hair out trying to get this fixed. Just because they don't say much doesn't mean they don't care about the people who volunteer to do all this work. Give it a damn break. Sit back, let your computer run, attach to other projects, or just let your computer sit there and collect dust. Sitting here bashing and hammering on one another is just childs play. Grow up!! |

Angus Depending on what version of BOINC, You are running this is an Old Problem. So from the BOINC Console the Help Tab "About BOINC Manager" will help let us know which version we are talking about. Why not? The downloads are broken - none of the ones that failed will ever complete, and will just end up being ghost results that will plague the database for months or years. The people at Berkeley are pulling their hair out trying to get this fixed. Just because they don't say much ... You think there is REALLY anyone there at all? Matt is off playing his 'gigs', and the rest(if there are any) are continent-hopping. I doubt anything will happen now before Monday. It's on autopilot, heading for the mountain. |

The people at Berkeley are pulling their hair out trying to get this fixed. Just because they don't say much ... Gee, they have a life outside of work. Isn't that a concept?? I think we should write UCB and demand that all the people who work on this project at their university are to be required to be there 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, give up their life, give up their family, just to please us, volunteers. They've been working on it all week. Who knows who else works there, as they probably don't bother posting here. You nor I nor anyone else here knows what goes on behind the scenes. Give it up. |

The people at Berkeley are pulling their hair out trying to get this fixed. Just because they don't say much ... Well, if they aren't there 24/7 trying to fix something broken, they should be. Does this sound like they're "tearing their hair out"? Sounds like getting out of town to me. In the IT world, there is real life, and then there are the extra-ordinary times when all else gets forgotten to do the super-human thing to get a system back up. It comes with the territory - IF you're committed to your job. Don't make excuses for them. |

Angus During the MAJOR August Outage did see things change... I did see posts that told users that Matt L was looking... He reset processes and things slowly moved ahead... No I would not want his Job... One of the Complaints in the Complaints thread was, I corrected Tony in that he can no longer do the 10 Jobs he is required to do... Somehwere in there "WE" all have to have some kind of Life... If you click on my name and go back through my posts, you will see periods that Have been very critical of how I feel that Berkeley manages SETI! I am still critical about what I feel is happening... But at this point, I do feel that people are working to insure that current work will not be lost... I do have reservations about the Enhanced Client (running currently, and also has workunits to upload). I do know that some of the people that have become invlolved because they were dissatified are working on it (Volunteers). The General Statement, is if you do not like then find where you can Help! The people at Berkeley are pulling their hair out trying to get this fixed. Just because they don't say much ... Matt Stated that he had things to do! I do Not Begrudge hime that...
