oh. yeah, you can go to the projects tab, highlight seti, click update, and they should report.

yes I can do this, but don't want to have to be manually updating every couple of hours. I will just let it run for a few days and see what happens. Thanks for the help.

Has anyone noticed that completed work units upload correctly but then in the work tab, the WU shows Ready to Report and does not release the WU, and on the projects tab, the total and average credits are not updated.

That's how it's supposed to work. Some versions reported immediately -- that was a bug.

Yes, it was a bug in 4.43 and 4.45. If you remember, 4.19 didn't do that, it waited and reported when fetching new work.

Version 5.2.4 optimized, go here -> http://www.marisan.nl/seti/index.htm
No newer optimized seti clients then 4.18.

The 5.x.x versions can not be installed on Win95 any more. Will this be the new policy from now on? I'm still using Boinc 4.72 on an old computer running Win95 and would like to upgrade. :-)

Message 183425 - Posted: 29 Oct 2005, 0:47:08 UTC

I'm still running 4.19, so guess it's time to do an upgrade. But does anyone know what the procedure is for the upgrade? Does it install on top of the previous version and take over the projects, or is it a completely new install and will I lose the WUs I'm working on (also working on Einstein and CPDN)?

How do I get hold of one of these optimised SETI clients for WinXP?

Many thanks!

For 4.19 you need to uninstall the previous BOINC version through Add/Remove programs (Windows) but leave the BOINC folder alone. Then install 5.2.5 to that same BOINC folder. After the benchmarks, it should pick up on all your science apps and work units without a problem.

Uninstall the old version, install the new.
On one of my machines i forgot to unistall the old one first the & installer found it, said i had to remove it first & then quit. No big deal.

will I lose the WUs I'm working on (also working on Einstein and CPDN)?

I think there is an issue with CPDN, someone will confirm or deny this.

I actually haven't been able to do a normal install of any BOINC version on my Win95 system, it quits with a silly statement that I need to install Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher. That's not really true, it's just looking for a certain version of a DLL. The workaround for that is to do a "Network Install" by running the install from a command line and adding "/a" without the quotes as an argument. It doesn't set a bunch of garbage in the registry nor offer options which have no meaning on a Win95 system. If you go this way, note that it will leave a 6.5MB boinc.msi in the directory you choose for the install, put the boinc files in <install path>\\Program Files\\BOINC, and the screensaver in <install path>\\Windows. IOW, if you pointed it to C:\\ the install would end up in the default install locations.

Another issue you might face is that the libcurl.dll built for the 5.x versions is set to require Winsock2. That's not really needed, the libcurl.dll at the curl site will work with Winsock1, but it is enough different in other regards that it cannot be used with BOINC. I submitted a bug-report on this issue, Rom will get to it when he has time.

Trying to upload the .zip files, and upload1.atm.ox.ac.uk doesn't respond.

Boinc 5.2.5 [ Linux }.

The scheduler climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk responds normally.

Someone on a CP forum suggested that maybe the CP sites software hasn't been upgraded to Boinc 5.x.

Thank you for your answer. This are however not the problems I see, I should have been more clear. I'm running Boinc on this Win95 machine from the start and until version 4.72 it worked fine. Only once I had to find a 'dll' and copy it to the system, but that's all.

Now, when I try to install Boinc 5.x.x, the Boinc installer displays a message box right at the start (before the installation starts), stating Boinc needs Windows version Win98SE, XP, 2000 .. and so on ... to work. Because Win95 is not listed I assume it is not supported anymore and I have to remove Boinc when version 5 becomes mandatory.
To me this looks like a policy change from the Boinc developers, or did I misunderstand something? :-)

Well after upgrading from 4.45 I have to say after having only three WU's die on me its been wonderfull, upgrading to 5.2.5 has been an advantage as one box I am using has the Intel Celeron processor and was taking almost 6+ hours to do a WU which would be around 2-4 days, now its doing it in 2 hours and I have had no probs with any of the other projects, just annoyed as I dont know why the 3 WU's I was working on died, probably the best bet for anyone upgrading is to wait for any WU's your working on to report before you do upgrade, best to err on the side of caution.

Happy Crunching,

Phill.

The requirement for winsock 2 has been made stiffer in the 5.2.x versions. That may be what is causing the installer to bomb.

It's not a major version change.

Namely this released addresses BOINC stopping Win9x machines from shutting down, crashes when RAS cannot be detected, and localization changes.

A screensaver fix was taken for the mac.

Localization updates for all platforms.

Well they fixed that good that's nice

As of about an hour ago, the .zip files began to upload.

I noticed, in another thread on the CP forum, that 'Carl' reported that he had just upgraded the servers to V 5.2, so CP is now in sync with the rest of the world. :-)
