I've been with SETI since 1999. I was even a beta tester for BOINC. I know someone leaked the public site and Berkley just ran with it. But this is getting to be annoying. I only have access to 2 computers, 1 home and 1 work. I've grown to like the credit system, even thought I think it sucks to crunch a wu and then have it show up as invalid. I've read all about the problems and whatnot. I guess you can say I'm in it for the credits even though I don't really compete with anyone. They were not ready to go live and we are the ones paying for it. I know others like Microsoft do the same thing. So I need a reason to stay. I would compare it to this, "Why should I vote? My vote doesn't count." I know my 2 computers won't make a lick of difference but if a lot of people leave, then it will. Anyone want to help me?, or is it "Don't let the door hit you on your way out!" |

BOINC supports multiple projects. You can pick the ones that you want to crunch for. The only other public project at the moment is http://predictor.scripps.edu/. Signing up for multiple projects gives you a way to have your computers doing something even if one or eventually several projects are out of work. We should all be sorry when any cruncher decides to leave. |

hehe it's down, too, it looks like. go fishing for a few days. when you come back, you will smell like a trout, look like a yeti and have WUs in your box (hopefully). > BOINC supports multiple projects. cause when they get it fixed, it'll be worth it...a WU will be something that means something... ----------------------------- It's kinda like finding out Crockett didn't go down like they lead us to believe...when will they learn that the truth is not just as good, it's better. |

I've been wanting to sign on for Predictor, and that was just the nudge I needed. > We should all be sorry when any cruncher decides to leave.\ So true. We out here in the hinterland are not nearly as frustrated as the BOINC team, I'm sure. C'mon folks, think about it: the "credits" are nice, but that's not what you orginally signed on for. You signed on because you believe in SETI, and want to participate. So it's really self-defeating to let a temporary frustration drive you away. |

For me there is only one answer: IF YOU BELIEVE IN THE PROJECT YOU'LL STAY ! ! |

Giving-up hope on the project is the same as giving-up hope on finding ETI. One should be more worried about the underlying science than the credit one receives. It's a team effort and is hugely supported by small contributors such as you and I. By participating in S@H, one day the project may discover life. Even if it wasn't my WU, I know that I still made a difference because I helped process the millions of WU's that weren't "the one" and without that help, the actual find may take much longer or the project even canceled before the WU was processed. If you hate to see your spare cycles wasted, try installing the Google toolbar with Folding@Home. I turn that on when S@H is down. http://toolbar.google.com/dc/offerdc.html Brian |
