I can't download a work unit. I get this message every time:
Remote control not allowed; using loopback adress

That message has nothing to do with not being able to download. Remote control is the ability for one computer on your lan to control another computer's BOINC.exe. If you don't have it set up this is the message you get.

For one reason or another the name of the account file is not correct. It should be
account_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml

Detaching and attaching again will very probably be the easiest way.

Thanks a lot. Works like a charm now.

Back to the original question:

I'm a newbie in all this.

What is "Remote control not allowed" saying to a user with only one PC?

I also received that line in my Messages section. I'm processing downloaded data (2 running, 2 waiting to run). One piece was picked up overnight. So, it seems to be working. What does Remote Control Not Allowed prevent me from doing? How can I correct it? Is it a reattachment like one of the previous posts suggested?

If you only have one computer you don't need to set up remote control. "Remote Control Not Allowed" does not prevent you from doing anything as you only have one computer.

and if you have more than one on a LAN, you can "control" them (although it's not as "exciting" as using BoincView, for example). More info is at http://boinc-doc.net/boinc-wiki/index.php?title=Remote_Hosts_File. In short:

1) create a file named "remote_hosts.cfg" in the BOINC Directory of the BOINC Client Software on the computer that you want to "monitor" (plain text file with IP addresses of computers that can access the "monitored" computer)
2) restart BOINC on the "monitored" machine (you will note that the "Remote control not allowed; using loopback address" message will not appear any more and it will say something like "remote control allowed" or something
3) on your "main" machine in BOINC manager, open "File/Select Computer" and type in the host name (I think IP address should also work); leave password blank
4) in your BOINC manager, you will see the BOINC window with stats from the "monitored" machine (and it will say "connected to xxx" as opposed to "connected to localhost" in the bottom right part of BOINC's taskbar
5) when you want to disconnect, just connect to localhost again (step 3 above).

As I said, nothing exciting from connecting to another machine - you will basically see the same information (and be able to control it - upload, refresh, run benchmarks etc. etc.) from your machine - in my mind, the only benefit of being able to do this is in instances where you run BOINC on machines that you do not have monitors keyboards etc. connected but just boxes lined up somewhere - in this case it helps. Otherwise one can just go to the room where the machine is and control it from its own monitor screen. More details and info is available on the wiki link above. good luck,
