Ok... i'm not sure what is going on, but my network finally timed out, so I restarted the server into safe mode. It is running like it should now. (Win2000Pro). Any suggestions? ... The network driver suggestions already given are a good bet. Note also the current security alerts for Win2K for "ZOTOB", "IRCBOT.WORM" and "RBOT.CBQ" malware 'that are doing the rounds'. Jim, check the network driver certification in the least, but also check if your network card is still functioning okay. See if there's a real update for it, not that Windows Update has snuck on you. That cause my Win2k Pro to load in 90 minutes at one time... just a bad "needed" network card driver. Last thing you may check is the IDE/SCSI drivers. If they are missing or corrupt, or Windows Update demanded it needed change as its drivers were "better", they will also make your Windows go sluggish, while rebooting will be a nightmare! |

UPS vendor American Power Conversion is announcing that customers with older software must update their software to avoid server downtime. This sounds exactly like what I am experiencing. About 3 weeks ago or so I installed an APC UPS on this machine. I am going to check this route first. Do you by chance still have the link to this article? @Jord... If I can boot up in "safemode with networking" and everything runs fine, would this eliminate your theory (or at least minimize it)? Because I've been running in "safe mode with networking" and have been able to browse this machine both locally and on the network. I"ve been transfering files off this machine and they've been flying, using 70%+ of the 100MBit network. @ML1.... Although I run daily anti-virus updates and scans, I will check the scan logs to make sure everything is ok there. @everyone... Thank you for the suggestions. I am going to try a couple of things here, starting with the APC issue. If I have anymore info I'll be back. |

Jim, in one word: No. When you boot up in Safe Mode, you aren't loading the correct drivers. Windows is then falling back on its safe mode drivers, or whatever (its own drivers). It will also not load any so-called power drivers, hence why you start up in 640x480, since the videocard drivers won't be loaded to full extent! I must correct what I said though, my 90 minute bootup was when Windows had decided my Promise TX133 Ultra drivers were outdated and had updated them together with a bunch of Windows updates I allowed. Going into Windows Safe Mode, then downdating if you want the drivers back to the previous version, rebooting and getting online to get my correct Promise drivers helped me at that time. Yet at another time Windows downloaded new and better drivers for my Realtek RTL8139 network card. Mind this card is not of the newer 810x family, yet the drivers were! That halted my Windows completely on a reboot. I had to put a Ghost image back to get past it. So yes, IDE drivers and network card drivers can certainly be what you are experiencing. If you go to the Device Manager now in Safe Mode and check up on what driver versions you are using and what the names/models of both of them are, I am about sure we can fix it. That is, unless you can get rid of it by updating the PowerChute drivers? P.S: You know where to reach me through email. :) |

next question. If I "disable" the UPS service, would that eliminate the problem that was discussed earlier? I "disabled" the service and rebooted and it still locked up. now, my aunt wants to go to the store so I will have to quit working for a little bit. |

I don't think it will solve your problem. Or as you noticed. ;) |

Maybe I'm wrong but I really don't think the UPS has anything to do with the Lockup's Jim. I run a seperate UPS (APC) on all my Computers & I've never had a problem with them causing any Lockups. But like I said I could be wrong...??? |

Yes, it doesn't hurt to try anything at this point ... |

Yes, it doesn't hurt to try anything at this point ... Seeing that said, do NOT under any circumstances remove Win2k hotfix (SP5) Q818043 if you have it on your system!!! That cost me another reinstall of a ghost image about 3 weeks ago. ;) (Result of removing this hotfix? Windows will never ever boot up again. Not in 4 hours, not in 40 years!) |

Here is a discussion thread for the APC problem Note that you must disable both the server and client services: http://forums.winxpcentral.com/showthread.php?p=35046#post35046 Extract: PROBLEM: Customer will experience a system hang when booting to windows (any version) if they are running Power Chute software older than version 7. NOTE: APC Sent an email to all customers on their mailing list several months ago about this. The cut-off was yesterday for the upgrade. CAUSE: APC requires Power Chute software to be updated to version 7 not later than yesterday and when the system attempts to boot, it will fail when loading the APC Server & APC Client services. WORKAROUND: Customer can boot to safe mode and disable the APC services for Server and Client. SOLUTION: Customer must uninstall the current version in the proper order: Client first, followed by server. Customer must download the current version (featured download on link listed above) and install it in the correct order: Install the AGENT first, the SERVER second and the CONSOLE last. Passwords MUST BE THE SAME for all three installations. Customer must have at least Java 1.4.1 installed Once these are installed, reboot system and it should come up normally. APC Technical Support can be reached at: 1-800-800-4272 Option 4, 1 if you need more information. http://www.apcc.com/tools/download/...704&id=125&tsk= ...don |

Jim, I don't know how big the Hard-drives are that you are using but I know a few of us brought down the Pirates@Home Site before they closed by making to many calls to the Server. Basically it was the same as a DNS Attack & it filled up the Hard-drives & then the Server wouldn't run until they cleaned off some of the data on them ... I've tried to avoid doing that since then but maybe you would want to check how full the are. Just throwing out Ideas to try and help get the Site back up again ... :) |

things, i'm afraid, have just gone from bad to worse... I now have had the BSOD come up on me twice in a row while trying to boot into safe mode with networking. going to try to boot into regular safemode, but I don't foresee it working. This may be the end of that machine as a Win2kPro... if I have to reinstall an OS I'm going with Linux. grrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I went through and just deleted a bunch of files, but I still had like 42% free before that. |

it's only 1740 here so I still have a few hours to work on this. As far as getting the project going again, if I do have to do something major.... that is going to require Rytis, as it is actually his project. |

Jim, are you getting any specific errors? can you get it booted up enough to run scandisk? You could have a dodgy HDD... scandisk may be able to recover files from bad sectors. hmm... are all your fans running OK? nothing running hot? cheers, Paul. Wanna visit BOINC Synergy? here is what the BSOD says: *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0x8184dbd0,0xc00000032,0x00000000,0x00000000) Inaccessible_Boot_Device if this is the first time ..... Che for viruses .... Refer to your ... manual .... Here's the events leading up to this. I had booted up and gotten to the login screen. the machine locked on me. nothing was working. no ctrl/alt/delete -- no nothing. I had to power down. (ouch) when I turned it back on it came up to the BSOD with the above message. |

Have you got a spare cable for your HDD? You could be getting a short somewhere along the way. This could also be indicitave of bad device drivers but that should not matter in safemode - windows will default to its standard driver... if it can. (are you booting from SCSI device?) Have you an option to start in 'last known good configuration'? This may help if you have possibly just udpated to a crappy driver. Can you boot off the CD and run scandisk? i could still be as simple as a few dodgy sectors... although it sounds like its getting worse by the boot! cheers, Paul. Wanna visit BOINC Synergy?
