The preliminary installation guide in the Wiki is nearing completion ... I would appreciate if people would have a look and then complian i f I missed a step ... look at nstalling BOINC And Participating In A BOINC Powered Project. I only have the one step by step for an OS = Windows so, I have more work to do ... and I know I still have to finish the service install extra step ... But I think I have all the screen shots I need and will be (hopefully) able to finish tomorrow ... but today I gotta quit ... so, look, complain, and I will work on it again tomorrow ... |

Hi Paul, Have read a bit and a few comments: step #1 - insert have e-mail addr and Seti classic password to hand. Getting Started - Credit - 3rd bullet - 2 results agree, granted is lowest claimed?? This is not how Seti/Einstein work - throw away top & bottom, average remainder. Installing Boinc Client .... Inital Launch of Boinc Bit confusing - do nothing or go look at msg's, which? when? why? add - if you or the computer did something benchmarks can be run from File - Run Benchmarks. Explain why benchmarks are run - estimate time for project, therefore amount of work downloaded, scheduling of projects, and calculation of claimed credits. Would have spent more time but have to research hardware firewall/router and graphics card coolers. Andy |

Hi Paul, It never says anything about needing your Classic password. Just if you want to have your Classic credits of the snapshot taken over into your account, use the same email address that you used to start Classic with. (Although even that is past time, I think) Getting Started - Credit - 3rd bullet - 2 results agree, granted is lowest claimed?? This is not how Seti/Einstein work - throw away top & bottom, average remainder. Ah yes, I see what you mean. I bet Paul has just taken the whole page over directly from the Boinc website, without checking for changes needed since it was made. I changed it already. Thanks for that. :) As for the rest, well it's a work in progress. I'm sure Paul is a bit tired around now. Let's just wait for him to finish this masterpiece and only then do all the complaints. ;) |

Getting Started - Credit - 3rd bullet - 2 results agree, granted is lowest claimed?? This is not how Seti/Einstein work - throw away top & bottom, average remainder. If there are only two results that agree, and you throw away the top and the bottom, you have nothing left. In this case, the top is discarded, and the bottom awarded. If there are three or more, throw away the top and the bottom and average the rest. BOINC WIKI |

John That would be "better" what I have seen is that the "averaging" is not happening. Then you see two others that have been assigned the work unit (total of 6 machines)... and still no "averaging." The quorum is based on three... Four or more are assigned, incase of a failure... The first three hit and it a "Done Deal." The forth is incase of a client failure... So yes if all six were completed and the top and bottom thrown out.. and the average of the 4 (yes it is tough to program) part of the credit issue would be solved... This makes it hard to prove as I do not have the history of "all workunits ever completed" by one of my machines. Getting Started - Credit - 3rd bullet - 2 results agree, granted is lowest claimed?? This is not how Seti/Einstein work - throw away top & bottom, average remainder. R/ Al Please consider a Donation to the Seti Project. |

step #1 - insert have e-mail addr and Seti classic password to hand. I assume you need classic password because I cannot get to my original A/C of 18 May 1999 without it. As for the rest, well it's a work in progress. I'm sure Paul is a bit tired around now. Let's just wait for him to finish this masterpiece and only then do all the complaints. ;) The very last phrase of Paul's post was "so, look, complain and I will work on it tomorrow ... " Andy |

Ok, I am not done here yet, and these are all good comments (I love it when a plan works)... I updated the page on Credit and hope I have the rules correctly written. And there is one more note I have to put in before I forget. About the account iinformation that belongs in the Attach Guide. So, if you start in the "master" guide, that takes you to the install guide which ONLY talks to the installation process, but I put some words in to reflect that ... so, I take it that the basic stuff is pretty good, but there are still a couple things. I did make more changes and for the moment aside from the comment about the benchmarks and messages being confusing ... well I will do that too ... As far as errors goes, yes, my FOCUS has been MOSTLY on getting the pages over and at least an initial update. But this is part of where I have always had to rely on, is the audience saying that I missed an update. With more fingers in the soup we SHOULD have a better chance of keeping it more up to date. But, again, I have to put time into many things to keep it sinking on an even keel. So, for example, I did a major re-write of the install guide and so far have nearly 5 days in on that with little else done. This is the little understood thing about documentation... good documentation is very hard to write and takes incredible amounts of time. I am not complaining, just explaining ... my "typical" day has me doing about 2-3 hours on the message boards and e-mail (I get a few "special" requests for help a day) the other 5-12 hours (depending on many factors not the least of which is my health - like yesterday I had to quit after only 6 hours or so ...). Anyway, it looks like the guide is in pretty good shape and that is the main thing I was interested in. So, now I will go back and clean up the explanation about the reason for the benchmarks. Look at it again later today and see if I got your concern, today, with luck, I will get the "attach" guide written ... |

Paul You're making very good progress and we all appreciate the efforts of you and the other writers/checkers/editors. We will try to make constructive critism only when invited to or we feel it could do with a little re-work. Andy |

Paul Consider yourself invited 24x7x3660 (just in case we have a long leap year). I tend to get random at times, and distracted. For example, I SHOULD be working on the attach but my heart is not in it ... :( ah well ... maybe I shuld just force myself ... The only bad news is, start giving constructive criticism you might get invited to do editing ... drat, I should not say that, it will stop people from complaining ... |

Well, I have the installation "done" up to the point where the attach occurs ... So, please, all of those that can, go back and see if I fixed the problems you saw before with an acceptable repair. I still have a number of guides to complete with some being made up of segments of the current material. You can see the "flow" in the list of BOINC "How-To" Guides at the bottom of the pages. In essence, I have divided up the process into the smallest "Chunks" that can stand alone becuase many of them are not always performed in a rigid sequence. I especioalluy need a check of the write-up for the "Service" install and the setting of the information there ... Note to Rom, If you have an invalid password, you cannot go back and change the choice for the use of the account permissions ... in other words, if you make a mistake in the choice yes/no, you CANNOT change your mind. Not sure if that can be "fixed". Nor is it well explained why I would or would not want to say yes ... I put text in the wiki about that though I am not sure if I got it right ... Note o all, I have screen shots for the chaning of the service parameters but I need to make a page ... but that will show up later as a BOINC "How-To" Guide ... |
