Does anyone know why my last 2 projects have been just sitting there not doing anything but saying ready to report? I have been idle now for more than 2 days and have no idea if there is something I can do about it. The messages part of the BOINC manager just keeps asking for more work but then defers communication.

I have the same situation here. As some have already said, it's because of heavy load on the server after the outage. The upload/download queue tends to get very large when everybody tries to UL/DL at the same time.

However, there is one thing you can do (except attaching another project), and that is to press the button to the left in the Transfers tab that is labeled "Retry Now". I'm probably going to get pepper for suggesting this, because it stresses the server and you will then get faster service than those who don't use this function, but it IS a function in the program... I use it myself.

Here are a few useful links to check the status of SETI:

Dilligaf,
Maybe a link to a standard half page summary of steps is required on the download and/or account creation pages of each project.

Exactly. I'd like to think I'm a reasonably bright person, and for sure I am a computer person (for many years) but even I found myself stumbling around in the dark with the transition.

Yes, all of the info is in fact available. But, it is in bits an pieces across numerous pages/sites. While academics might enjoy the challenge, I think the idea of the project is to recruit everyday users in the hope of getting them to donate cycles.

The classic site should link to a well written, well organized summary of BOINC and how to transition. That page should then link to BOINC. Currently, the classic site just dumps you BOINC and you're on your own.

I have one stop shopping ... and usually help when I am awake via e-mail ...

I comb the message boards for material that is not covered in the Wiki ... and when asked add specific responses to a new problem.

I grat there is a lot of material, and it can be frustrating, and I have been agruing for a little over a year about this. But, I can't force the projects to even point to my site much less use it. Just like I cannot make you look their first either.

At the moment the Wiki has about 15 contributers and changes are made every day. Many are minor, but, we usually add about 5 pages a day of new things and that does not look like it is going to change any time soon. Most of the procedures are captured and then refined by actually following exactly what is in there ...

Anyway, welcome all ... and if you find something explained better elsewhere well, if nothing else I can point to there ...

This page ( http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/related.php ) points to your old site, you should see if they will change it to point to the Wiki

I asked already ... but I don't know when they will make the change.

Same thing on other sites. I still have a page up on the old site so you can link through there...

Just this will save a step if you make the change ...

Hey Paul, I went ahead and updated the related.php page, it now points to the wiki.

Thanks for all the hard work related to BOINC.

No, Rom was right to wait. The Wiki, though more complete was not really the only place to go. Now it is ... the only thing missing are the page descriptions for the BOINC Web Site. Though they did not get much traffic, it helps to have the explanation JUST IN CASE ... :)

But obviously, they are a lower priority. I added a few already as they are central to the installation process ...

And we talk to preferences and reccomendations on settings so that is another of my important to migrate soon pages ...

Anyway, thanks for the change Rom ...

And, Rom, You are most welcome ... you do your part ... I will do mine ... :)

Oh, and I got the tee shirt from LHC@Home ...

Paul, do you have BBCode in Wiki?
Closest I could find was Forum Preferences, which is yet unfinished. Not my intention to nag or anything, I just wondered. :)

Don't want to be accused of threadjacking but if you are using Firefox the BBcodeXtra extension makes you an instant expert :0)
When using IE I use the Fass standalone editor. Finally IE now comes with tabbed browsing but you must install the MSN Search Toolbar.

Thanks, Digitalis. Great tips!
But there's an error in the BBcodeXtra link.

That link doesn't work.

Try this instead: BBcodeXtra

Good luck,

Very weird, when I click it I get Paypal! If I edit the original message and copy and paste the url into a new tab it works ok. Anyway I edited the link out. ML1s works ok, thanks for the correction.

No, I HAD a lesson on HTML and how to make that work in the forums. The major diffence with BBCode is that you use square brackets and named tags instead of HTML code. though most HTML code gets stored and rendered properly most of the time (though the style sheet for "pre" tags stinks).

I can bring it over if you like. You can find the old URL here if you want to look at it. It is pretty dated though it all still works ...

Thanks. I think it was Rom Walton who said (somewhere around here) that he'd remove the ability to use HTML in posts, thereby only allow BBCode, so I guess the HTML lesson page would be less useful in the future (for BOINC users/posters). OTOH, such lessons are always useful - speaking in general terms! :)

If I were to choose which lesson to be converted to Wiki first; BBCode or HTML, I'd prefer the former. But as you said, it's of lower priority and I can live with that. No hurry. :)

There is always the "quick Help" in the link beside the entry box that says:
BBCode tags are a way to specify what kind of formatting you want where on various pages on this project. It's similar to HTML, although simplified for use here. The tags start with a [ (where you would have used in HTML).

Examples:

* Bold to Bold
* Italic to Italic
* Underline to Underline
* Big text to Big text
* Red text to Red text
* Google to Google
*
Quoted
for quoted blocks of text
* to display an image
*
Code snippet here
to display some code
*
Pre-formatted text here
to display some pre-formatted text

Lists are also possible:

  • Item 1
  • Item 2

to:

* Item 1
* Item 2

Please note if you mess up and don't close a tag or don't specify a parameter correctly, the raw tag itself will display instead of the formatted text.

Yes, thanks. I know how to use BBCode and where to find it... usually when I post here it's because I want to help others or attract attention to a specific topic from developers or Berkeley staff. :)

Since this thread was about reading docs and finding out how to use the board, I thought I'd bring this up also. You never know if some of the new users are looking for formatting codes. Anyway, thanks for your efforts! It's no hurry to document this in Wiki - at least now, when you posted a useful overview right here. ;)

One of the things that I had in the old site was a direct map from the pages in the web site to a page in the documentation ... but the highest hit count on any of those pages was about 150 or so... so, more than likely it was mostly me looking at them. I have brought over a couple and will be bringing over the rest as I have time.

I lobbied for a change to the code in the web pages so that there would be a symbol/link you could click so you could get some help that was page by page ...

But this is back to my "push" to improve the documentation.
