I have found that boinc client permanently does totally useless job with hard drive. That is why I will abandon it to prevend hard drive damage.
I believe that it is a big problem to permanantly scan for one file (many times pre second) and it will also speed up a computer if this file was checked e.g. less than once per a minute.

Could anybody explain me this:

Did you accept the defaults when you installed the program? Maybe if you did not then it is trying to look for the different files that are not where it thinks they are.

My recent install on Win2KPro SP4 is doing the exact same thing. BOINC 4.25 was installed with defaults.

If BOINC Manager is closed , the requests slow down to 5 to 10 per second, however with BOINC Manager open, the requests to query index.dat come 20 to 30 times a second.

It's boinc.exe doing this, not the S@H client.

My BOINC is shut down until this is resolved. Hope no one is waiting for all those WUs...

I have not run 4.19 - started a couple of weeks ago with 4.25, which was the latest non-beta that was available on the BOINC site, IIRC.

Is this a known problem? Where is the list of known bugs?

This activity will not damage your hard drive - they won't even touch it. These requests will be satisfied from the file cache (all but the first that is).

The file cache is held im memory, where all 'recent' (the last few megabytes of) disk data is held. These calls will simply cause memory accesses.

I do agree though that this activity is a total waste of CPU cycles, but nothing more sinister.

Put BOINC back on, carry on crunching, your hard drive will last just as long.

It appears the call to an API defined as InternetGetConnectedState in WININET.DLL queried both the registry and disk everytime it was called. This issues has since been resolved with 4.35.

Feel free to use 4.35.
