I was already running 4.09, and just downloaded 4.09 again! I managed to take md5sums of the "old" ones before they were replaced, and they ARE different from "new" ones:

Old:

setiathome_4.09_windows_intelx86.exe c6869aaddeefebaf3839fee73e4d2e95
setiathome_4.09_windows_intelx86.pdb 338a7bb2564c36c4f52663e22988bd8e

New:

setiathome_4.09_windows_intelx86.exe 7b7f58e14850fceb564c0afb36cea71c
setiathome_4.09_windows_intelx86.pdb 25e6483c5cc41a9a8a03ae424294a2bb

So why has a different pair of files with the same version number released instead of 4.10 or 4.11?

Interesting...

They released 4.10 for about 1/2 a day, then pulled it. It was supposed to fix some graphic issues, instead, it caused some graphics issues.

does this help?

Tony,

I know this, just take a look at this thread: Back to 4.09 ?

I downloaded 4.09 again this morning although I had downloaded 4.09 after 4.10 was relased and pulled back as mentioned in the above thread. They have different checksums, and that made me curious, that's why I posted.

Could a kind soul post md5sums of his/her current 4.09 .exe and .pdb files just for comparison?

Regards,

Ertugrul.

These are the same as those of my "new" files, so I guess I'm "up to date". What really makes me wonder is why I had a different set of 4.09 files with different checksums. Could project admins and moderators elaborate on this?

Did anybody else notice 4.09 being downloaded over 4.09?

Didn't happen to me... I accidently detached from the project, and had to download the apps again. Took a couple WUs with it too. (not as many as my linux box was killing for other projects, though)

I have just downloaded yet "another" set of 4.09 files. The cheksums are the same as those of the "new" ones I posted before, which means that I have just downloaded the very same files again! I presume that this is only happening to me since nobody else has reported a similar incident.

Could somebody explain what is going on? Downloading the same files over and over again is nothing but a terrible waste of resources.

Hi

Have you made an virus check?
Maybe one of the files was corupted.
I remember my son had this problem last year and his machine was infected by different trojans.
But only my idea.

My AV is set to scan my entire hard drive once a day, I regularly scan for malware and spyware and I have a personal firewall. Virii, trojan horses and spyware are simply out of question in my case... I'm on dial-up, too, and it is really annoying to download the same files over and over again.

I have just downloaded yet another set of "new" 4.09 files which are exactly identical to the "old" ones... This is really beginning to get annoying!

Still no explanation from project folks?

Are you completely out of seti-wu, and must re-download v4.09 when at last gets more work? If you also have seti-v4.10, the problem is that the BOINC client only keeps the highest-numbered application-version when all wu using old version(s) is done. Resetting the project should AFAIK fix this problem.

Remember, resetting a project will delete all current cached work and any results in progress or "ready to report", so don't reset before atleast all finished results have been reported. ;)

If it continues to cause you problems, I suggest that you delete the files:

setiathome_4.10_windows_intelx86.exe
setiathome_4.10_windows_intelx86.pdb

from the folder "Program Files~BOINC~projects~setiathome.berkeley.edu"
{ backslash characters replace with '~'}

As BOINC deletes all but the highest version when it has no more work, it will keep 4.09 as it's the latest.

There may also be the same two filenames in the folder:
Program Files~BOINC~slots~0

I don't have the faintest idea what these are though as they're only 100 bytes each - anyone know what they are?

I indeed had 4.10 files, deleted them as Mike suggested, but 4.09 files were downloaded again some time later. So I did a reset after finishing, uploading and reporting my results as Ingleside suggested.

I think this was a side effect of downgrading from 4.10 to 4.09. Let's see what happens now...

Not sure if this applies to you but I have noticed that if you completely drain your cache of work the 4.09 files are deleted therefore when more work is d/l it needs to get the client 4.09 files again. If this is your case just increase your cache size a little to always keep at least one ready to run. Hope this helps :)

98SE XP2500+ @ 2.1 GHz Boinc v5.8.8

And God said"Let there be light."But then the program crashed because he was trying to access the 'light' property of a NULL universe pointer.

Alternatively, you can delete the file 'setiathome_4.10_windows_intelx86.exe' from the BOINC~Projects folder.

When all work is completed, BOINC deletes any older versions of the project applications. If there is no work, and 4.10 is present, 4.09 gets deleted. Then it downloads work, finds it needs 4.09 and dlownloads that too.
No 4.10 application and it wont delete the 4.09 application

You may also need to delete the app PDB file too, and the small files with the same names from the BOINC~slots~x folders. I don't know if this is necessary, but I did.

Take when you delete - mistakes can be nasty.

This will not work, since it's still listed in client_state.xml and the client will therefore still treat v4.10 as highest-numbered application and delete older applications if out of work.

The easiest method is to reset the project, but it is also possible to manually edit client_state.xml

Good point. It certainy is what I did, and I didn't edit the XML file. But I have not run out of work since then, so it may well be that I havn't seen the outcome ;)
Suppose it doesn't really matter either way as there's no need for for running out of work anyway...
