If you mean just the cpu, probably not.
The motherboard would have had to have been made to accept it when it was designed, unless yours was made at the end of its life span then the chances are not good. You will need to now the specs of the motherboard, do you have a model number and manufacturer?

You would be better served to spend a little more and get a more modern CPU/MB ... the cost may be about the same but you will get a lot more bang for the dollar.

Heck, Frys has been running a special for a Semperon something for $179 with Linux ...

Well, the thing is that I had this very slow PC, so I changed the MOBO and CPU, so I have a CPU and a MOBO left, and I want to get he most juice out of the MOBO... so... I thought that I should buy a new CPU that fits the MOBO (Slot 1) and I found the fastest Intel processor thats Slot 1 (PIII 1GHz) And I'm looking for them in ebay (hehehe cheap :) ) But I want to make sure if it will work with my mobo (currently using a PII 233MHz)

I had a PII 350 slot 1 crunching boinc until the end of the last year. My mobo suported a processor up to 800MHz and a fsb up to 112MHz. My Pentium was running at 392 MHz. You should go to your bios and and if it has an option to change the multiplier you can see the max. speed for a processor that is supported.

In my Mobo suported a multiplier up to 8x. Multipling that for a fsb of 100 (my case) equal to 800MHz- max. speed processor suported.

If hasn't this option go to your mobo manufacturer home page to see the specs to see the max speed processor that is supported!

By the way my PII took between 14 to 20 hours to complete a work unit!

I think the best you'll do is a PII 450. You should be able to get one with a fan for about 10 bucks.

If you can find the motherboard manufacturers' web site, they may tell you the fastest CPU you can use (possibly with a BIOS upgrade).

as far as where, i would suggest checking out local 'computer outlets'
i got a matched pair of PII 333/512 for $5 each in one last weekend.
i also know that pcsurplusonline.com sells old pulls like these.
CPUs
the prices aren't wonderful, but...

good luck and happy crunching!

Check with CPUZ, tab mainboard, if it can find out what motherboard model it is.

Look at the chipset next to the slot 1 if it is a intel 443(440)BX it will support 100+ fsb but it may be set by jumpers on the motherboard.
If it is a 440 LX you are about at your limit unless you go Slot 1 Celeron they run on a FSB of 66.
Just check out my computers all but 3 are slot processors They do the job but they can be slow.

Good luck,Scott

Ok i have the MOBO on my lap and the chipset right next to the slot says:
INTEL
AGPset
FW82443LX
F815ID16
SL2KK
INTEL '96

I think its 443LX not 440LX, well i guess i'll just have to get a celeron (slow) for this thing (can't even call it a PC anymore :) )
Thanks (You just saved me a couple of bucks :) )

Have a look at the upgrade products by Powerleap. They have an online configurator to choose the best upgrade for your mobo. They also sell adapters to convert Slot I to S370. However, they can be expensive. It might be cheaper to buy a cheapie computer.
