is 0 credit fair for the one that successfully completed the work while all the others failed to download the WU?

nope, it isn't fair. Its yet another reason why people should be forced to upgrade to Boinc CC 4.19 at least.

[edit]for those not aware of earlier versions shortcomings. earlier clients would give a download error if there were problems (disconnected connections, etc) during the download. New versions remember where they left off and finish the download. [end edit]

I agree completely. BOINC CC 4.13 has caused a lot of problems especially when there is a lot of traffic to the servers after an outage.

To truly explore, one must keep an open mind...

... or maybe the credit system could leave these results as pending until more valid results are returned. I don't know ...

The problem with that Alexhs (and this is pure conjecture) is that I believe the system thinks something is wrong with that Work Unit as, after all, a number of clients had problems crunching it. Now in this case it was a short coming of the client software and not the WU, but it's difficult for the scheduler to know that. I believe if the WU is pending, the scheduler will continue to send out the WU. However, if it's marked as "Over" the scheduler doesn't continue to send out the WU (though I don't know what then happens to the WU).

So yeah, it does suck that you got 0 credit for and that's unfortunate. But at the same time the scheduler is trying to automatically handle cases where bad WU's get sent out... Unfortunately in this case it looks like it's not the WU but the client instead.

I believe they can put a hook into the Seti program that stops processing unless you upgrade. I believe this was used at least once before. Why not use it again, if they know too many people have it? Just a thought.

It certainly can be done and is done Pooh Bear. Einstein requires people use 4.19 and I believe they are the project that requires the highest release. I believe SETI also requires a specific release, though I'm not certain what it is (it's obviously 4.13 or lower). As to why they don't require people use 4.19 or higher at SETI, I'm not privy to that information. It definately does require balancing the fact that the BOINC client has to be manually updated though which means for large farms people would have to manage that somehow and it can be problematic...

Alexhs,

Yeah, i got one of those too. It kinda sucks getting 0 credit for your work, but i figure it's just part of the game. I noticed that yours and mine both were downloaded right after the outage, so hopefully this was just an anomaly. :)

Happy crunching!

Also, it looks like it takes 5-6 different computers having download errors for this to crop up, so hopefully it should be pretty infrequent, even in the case where it'd happen most often, right after an outage.

But people running those farms decided to install on all those systems and therefore have the responsibity of looking after said machines. And being responsible means making sure you update for the good of the project and the other crunchers. Updates come out for a reason not just to inconvenience you! (that is a plural you)

And God said"Let there be light."But then the program crashed because he was trying to access the 'light' property of a NULL universe pointer.

I too have 0 credit or it is still pending. My message board says it is using Boinc 4.25 starting up but only using 4.09 for computation by setiathome so how can I get the latest 4.13 or later

4.25 is the latest version, so you're fine. For the science programs (i.e. setiathome being on version 4.09) the BOINC Manager manages the upgrade when it's needed so the user has no reason to do so (unless you need to use the Anonymous Platform Method for various reasons, but that's a bit more advanced than most people would need). The version number that people are referring to is the BOINC Manager version. It's the BOINC software, not the SETI software (or whatever project) that manages downloads onto your local computer.

It was just a question, not a complain. But I believe that the development team should handle these situations somehow...

PS. ... and what if in that rejected WU hides THE signal? :)

I suspect they are investigated to see exactly why they failed -- and bugs fixed or work recycled as needed.

Most of the WUs that error out are noisy, so if "the signal" is there, it's masked in the noise. There are probably other work units from the same spot in the sky recorded on different days.

Go to your account and edit your profile. There's a section for your signature to put on your posts. Put a [img src="Your image here"] tag in there, but replace the [ with

Madmac, the picture to the left (such as my Picture of Pilot from the series Farscape) is called an Avatar. You can upload any .jpg or .png file you want. It should be a maximum of 100 X 100 Pixels and less than 4K in size. You go to "your account" "forum preferences" and you'll see the Avatar parts.

The Signature you see below my words is another story. Is that what you wanted?

Hope this helps
