When there's a heavy rainstorm, there's lighting and thunder. But I've never experienced either during a blizzard.

Is it possible to have lightning during a blizzard?

Yes I have seen it once or twice. Cloud to cloud, and that purple/blue streak reflecting through the snow, very cool (then again I like lightning).

What I would like to know is why it is rarer?

Still looking for something profound or inspirational to place here.

Sure, but not nearly as often. Raindrops generate far more static electricity than snowflakes do.
You will be assimilated...bunghole!

A few weeks ago here in Cincinnati we had a snow storm. I did not see the lightning but I did hear the thunder. Some people call it Thundersnow. It usually happens about once a year around here.

Yes, I have seen lightning (and with that thunder! ;-)) in snowblizzards here! Not so often but not so rare either!
