I am sorry to report that my BOINC stats site (found at http://stats.kwsn.net) is down along with our team forum (http://www.kwsnforum.com). The server appears to have completely locked itself up. As far as I can tell it is still up and will even establish a TCP connection but won't send any data. There is a possibility that it came under some kind of external attack although I believe it was something that went wrong internally. So far we have been unable to contact anyone who can kick it for us so we are completely dead in the water. My stats site can still be viewed on my home server at http://macg.no-ip.info:5520/boinc/ but this is on a residential cable connection and my personal linux box which doesn't quite match the performance of the real server so it might be a little slower loading. Sorry for this interruption. We are working to get the issue resolved but chances are nothing will happen until after the weekend. Toby A member of The Knights Who Say NI! I was just informed that there was a HUGE storm over in northern europe (the server is located in Norway). 14 people were killed and tens of thousands of homes are without power and phone service. I'm not sure where exactly the server or our contact person is located but it is quite possible that they were affected. As of yesterday the server itself seemed to be powered up however now it appears to be completely offline. Here is hoping for the best! A member of The Knights Who Say NI! I see I'm not the only one with server probs this weekend. Hope they find don't your box somewhere in Kansas. For now I'll just keep hopeing it is just a downed power line. Our main server is up. but my personal box on the server is down. If you'd like I could ask them if they would be kind enough to host temperarily on the main server for you till it gets worked out. |

I've been missing my fellow silly Knights terribly...don't anyone tell them I said that. lol I hope the server is up again soon, and I'm very sorry to read about the huge storm in Europe. Mother Nature has been going crazy lately. If any of the Knights happen to pass through this way, my email is lafemmeshelly@hotmail.com Michelle Lady Who Says Ni! |

It seems like the authorative name servers for kwsn.net are also unavailable (at the time of writing), so I can't determine which company hosts the stats server. But I guess it's the same one that hosts the name servers: Active24 (formerly ActiveISP). They're located in Oslo, far from where the storm caused the most calamity. Besides, they should have unlimited backup power (my workplace has, and we're tiny compared to them). Toby, have you had any luck with the support info at www.active24.co.uk? If not, and if you need assistance with language or anything at the Norwegian counterpart, give me a PM over at the Picard forums. |

The server is donated by one of our members, and we're sort of outside the normal tech support system. I doubt anyone at active24 would have any clue what we were talking about. Once we manage to get a hold of our contact, it should get sorted out fairly quickly. Then we can work on getting our dns set up a little more sensibly (so we can point it somewhere else in the event the server craps out again). |

Mother Nature has been going crazy lately. > She sure is. Here in California (and the entire western United States, for that matter) we're having rain and snow WAY above average. Our usual average here in Los Angeles is only about 3 inches of rain for the entire month of January. We got over 7 inches in one storm alone...and we had THREE such storms over the course of two weeks! I feel like a fish... You will be assimilated...bunghole! |

Actually... in the last six months, y'all down in LA have had more rain than we've had in Portland. Portland, I think, is a bit below average. So, not the entire Western US... just California. Southwest, maybe? :-) Rob |

Indeed - note both name servers are the same server... and if it resolved, you'd see that kwsn.net is hosting its own DNS on that server. Rob |

I am happy to report that we were finally able to get our server rebooted and my stats as well as the KWSN team forum are back in service! I spent most of the day today patching up the database and making sure things hand't been corrupted. Please read here for the announement I posted to the site. I would also like to thank everyone who sent us emails offering to help in one way or another during the outage. Unfortunately our setup wasn't very flexible so we pretty much just had to wait it out. We are going to be investigating ways of making our services more robust in the future. Now maybe I can get back to implementing new features :) Toby A member of The Knights Who Say NI! For rankings, history graphs and more, check out: My BOINC stats site |
