Profile: Daniel Harvell

Personal background
Born and raised in Michigan, I am a graduate of Shelby Public School in Shelby, Michigan (a small town, just north of Muskegon and Whitehall). After graduation from Shelby Public School, I attended Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana. My major was Communications with an emphasis in Mass Media. After college, I moved around, a bit, spending time in Iowa, Illinois, and New York, but ultimately moved back to Michigan. When I settled down, back in my home state, I married my beautiful wife in 2000 and took a job in Information Technology, the same year. My wife and I have 3 daughters. In 2007, I left my position in I.T. and opened a portrait and wedding photography studio, called 7:10 Studio Photography. When note shooting portraits and weddings, I enjoy photographing landscapes and creating abstract photographic art. I also write music under the name Null Factor. I have 6 releases, under that project name, currently working on a 7th release.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
My interest in SETI began in 1992, when, on my way home from a friend's house (at four o'clock in the morning), I witnessed two lights crisscrossing the sky. To this day, I cannot come up with an explanation as to what caused those lights. A few years later, I witnessed an aircraft that was triangular, in shape, with red lights at the three points. The shape of the craft does not match any aircraft in operation, then, nor now. Then, in October of 2009, my family heard a sound that seemed to originate from the sky, but seemed to come from all directions, at once. I attempted to triangulate the origin of the sound, by driving around, but no matter where I went, the sound seemed to be coming from everywhere, at once. Though I consider myself a healthy skeptic, I am open-minded. I joined SETI@HOME to pitch in to the community, believing that, with more eyes to the sky, the better chance there is to catch a signal of otherly origin. If, by using my computer's resources, when I'm not doing anything, I can help the process, than I am extremely happy to assist.

My only suggestion for the SETI@HOME project is to create a more streamlined set of instructions as to how to start. While the directions on the SETI@HOME site are a good starting point, I notice that a lot of beginners have similar questions - mainly, how to get started. Perhaps, a more thorough instruction set would help answer the questions that commonly arise, when we newbies fire our little corner of the SETI universe up!
