Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
It seems that nearly every single and some of the binary stars have some planets. Therefore I think it's presumptuous to believe that earth is the only planet in the whole universe, with it's billions of galaxies with billions of stars, that produced lifeforms like us. The question is, how advanced their technology is. There are 3 possibilities;
1. they don't have wireless communication:
We won't be able to detect them directly. No threat, no benefit.
2. they have wireless communication:
When they are able to send signals we could understand, then they are also
able to detect signals, others had sent. The first signals they will receive
are radio and tv broadcasts from the middle 30's (broadcasts from the German
Reichstag with Adolf Hitler demanding the erasure of the jews for example, or
the A-bomb falling on Nagasaki and Hiroshima). Let's hope they won't be able
to decode those signals. Maybe the first signals we will receive are their tv
or radio broadcasts or every other wireless transmitted signal. No threat, but
philosophical and scientific benefit.
3. their technolgy is beyond our imagination:
We won't be able to detect them, without they wanting us to do so. But in this
case they will wait until we defeated our addictiveness to self destruction. No
threat, because I think no destructive, "intelligent" lifeform will reach a
technology level that allows them to travel in space. When they let us detect
them, there will be scientific, philosophical and economic benefit for both
sites, i hope. |
