Profile: Bennett A. Wallace

Personal background
I'm currently a social work doctoral student studying at Kent School of Social Work, in Louisville, KY. I work part time as a crisis invention counselor. When I'm not working, I'm either studying, reading, or surfing the net or at the gym. I recently traveled to Germany and Hungary as part of a school trip. It has been the first time that I traveled to Europe and I hope to go again.

I've always have had an interest in astronomy and physics, which I've picked up from my love for science fiction. I consider myself a "Trekkie" although, of the 'Next Generation' series, instead. I beleive we'll be traveling the stars some day, but lately, with everything going on in the world, it would seem more later then sooner. I hope I'm wrong.

Peace,
Bennett
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1a. I believe extraterrestrial life exists and feel we'll discover it with continued improvements in astro-and-partical physics research. I believe once we better understand the properties of space and time, and are able to manipulate these properties, we'll be on the threshold for discovering extraterrestrial life, or at least come across some past evidence of its existance.

1b. The benefits for discovering extraterrestrial life I would hope, aside from scientific and technological advancements, would be a uniting of the human race. As for encountering and dealing with any dangers, I believe it will orignate more from our own behavior and reaction to discovering either the evidence or an actual extraterrestrial life form, than from the life from itself. In short, I feel humanity will need to hasten its moral development, if it hopes to handle the possible dangers that may result with discovering extraterrestrial life.

2. Sending a beacon into space dosen't seem like a partical endeavor. Besides, since we've discovered other solar systems, it seems reasonable that our own solar system is all the 'beacon' that is required for us to be discovered.

3. I run SETI@home on my desktop and laptop computers. I do so because I believe it's a worthwhile project and found it to be a unique way I could participate. Moreover, I believe that most of our problems on earth will require the greater participation of all humans in some shape or another, as opposed to those who own and control the worlds resources, and therefore, get to dictate the 'what' and 'when' to the (re)solution of problems as they see see and define them. I find SETI@home to be an ideal strategy or framework towards tackling large scale problems and therefore, find intriguing as a possible solution towards understanding a wide variety of social problems better.
