Profile: Richard

Personal background
I live in Franklin, Indiana, but originally from Columbus, Ohio. I am 62 years old, divorced, have four children...and six grandchildren, of which three live with me. I retired from the military service in the summer of 1995 and now officially retired. I originally got into seti@home back in 2001 but stopped unexpectedly. Now, I am back. My hobbies include: writing poetry {I have had some of my work published in anthologies throughout the world}; sci fi, a trekkie...but not overly religious about it; I have interests in astronomy, dinosaurs, evolution, physics {anything to do with space}; star gazing...my favorite constellation is "Orion"; I have always been fascinated with the universe, even as a child. I wanted to be an astronaut, to fly to the moon; I even wanted to be superman to get there quicker. I like to shoot pool, walk in the park and other things my mind and heart agree upon. I have an associate degree in science, lacking a few hours from my bachelor.

BEST FEATURES:

Eyes and heart

GUNPOWDER PLOT:

Remember remember the fifth of November Gunpowder, treason and plot. I see no reason why gunpowder, treason Should ever be forgot.

WRITING POETRY:

Why I Write:----- I write because if I scream, someone will judge. Because if I cry, They'll make me go to counseling. Because my complaints need to be heard, And my paper and pencil listen and understand. Because I want people to know the truth, Without me having to see the disappointment in their eyes. Because my voice is soft, And my words are strong. Because other people can't write, And it's a privilege to be a scribe for them. Because if I don't, Who will?

The following I wrote back in 1994 of the Shoemaker-Levi 9 asteroid/comet and published in "Sharing Special Moments" by
Creative Arts and Science Enterprises, 1995.

A JOVIAN ENCOUNTER

Facing a fate it cannot change,
A mighty giant waits,
While significant agglomerations
Of dust, rock, and ice,
An enemy of 21,
Race across an infinite black sea.
At journey's end, the night sky blazes;
Fireballs plunge into hurricane-force winds,
Violent storms, and poison gases,
Flattening like pancakes against a harden mass.
An atmosphere ripples, hellish
Gushers of dust and debris
Pour upward in rich profusion,
Forming a celestial show of fireworks.
Shock waves invade Jove's fierce interior;
The planet shudders perceptibly and rings like a bell.

MY THOUGHTS:

Worrying is like riding a rocking horse. It occupies your time, but doesn't get you anywhere! MMMMM...wonder if the horse was bolted down...mine moved and flipped over a few times.

I AM A WEREWOLF:

Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers each night may become a wolf when the wolf-bane blooms and the autumn moon is bright.

I DON'T BELIEVE:

All those tears wasted For every emotion unreal All those heartbeats hastened For something only I feel All those moments forgotten For each passing second All those lies forgiven For something to be strong All those feelings revealed For each word spoken All those wounds unhealed For every step I’ve taken All those sufferings I endured For someone unworthy All those heartbreaks uncured For each time you fooled me All those sacrifices I made For you to be happy All the love that I gave Left me cold and empty.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe there is life in space, maybe not like us...but surely something. It would be nieve on our part to think we are that special to be the only life in the vast universe. How and when we discover lifeforms beyond our own solar system will depend upon our willingness to continue the research, the funding to keep it going; and the willingness of the human race to join SETI's cause and help out in the endeavor. What's to say that we haven't already been visited by extraterrestrial life in the past or even now. The benefits of such a discovery, if a superior race, would be overwhelming: new medical technology...the cure for the common cold; advance technology...beam me up, scotty! But, on the other hand, we might contact a conquering race...as the Romans centuries ago...and we would be in a world of hurt...not to mention the possibility of the end of what we call the human race. But, we as humans must take the risk of sending out information about who we are and where we are at. This is call human hospitality. I have been involve with SETI before back in the early 80's. I was a member of the Planetary Society and even had a telescope. But I fell by the wayside. Now I am back and involve with the SETI@home project. I believe as many other seti@home users that we can make a difference in finding other life forms in our vast universe. I think the project is a great move into the future.
