Profile: Hat Creek Joe -> LKSAB

Personal background
I am a retired high school English teacher who lives about 15 air miles from the UC, Berkeley Hat Creek Radio Astronomy Laboratory. We "locals" are very proud of the 40 year pioneering research performed by the facility. Needless to add, we in this *very* rural area are excited about the Allen Telescope Array (ATA) devoted to SETI. Work is proceeding *ahead* of schedule; so, if all goes well, 350 dishes will constitute the final array and be in operation by 2006!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I accept the mathematical model that predicts 1,000,000 examples in our galaxy *alone* possess intelligent life. Unfortunately, I am also a realist who bridles my optimism for discovering evidence at the "watering hole" to be slim due to a variety of evolutionary scenerios. The bottom line is that it will only take one "burp" received by our civilization to prove to me beyond any doubt that, indeed, there are others "out there." There is *no doubt* in my mind that one form or another of exo-biology is the norm rather than the exception. Life in the galaxy is as prevalent in other solar systems as it is in our own: the variety of life and its incredible range of habitation zones on earth proves this.
