Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
SETI@home is a wonderful way for people like myself to get involved in a large science research project, while not having the technical credentials to do so. The search for extraterrestrial intelligence is one of the greatest unresolved quests of our time, whose positive outcome would dramatically modify the way we humans perceive ourselves and define our role in the universe. Finding extraterrestrial intelligence would inspire humility and hopefully be a catalyst for solidarity among humans. It would also represent a revolution in the fields of philosophy and political science, as we would have to expand the public sphere to include extraterrestrial lifeforms, and force geopolitics to evolve into cosmopolitics. |
