Profile: Alexander Gross

Personal background
I was born on January 9, 1984 in Vienna, now I study technical physics at the TU Vienna (Technical University). My main interests are science, music and computers. I compose on and play piano and synthesizer, the style of music I make is classical/soundtrack. Regarding science, I'm particularly interested in unifications in general, string theory, quantum field theory, quantum computing, space propulsion (especially FTL), antigravitation and astrophysics.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
First of all, I believe that alien life exists - wouldn't it be odd if our universe with it's great amount of galaxies, space and time would possess only one inhabitated planet? Furthermore, I think that intelligent alien lifeforms exist, may they be human-like or unlike anything our limited mind can understand. Maybe an advanced civilization ist already aware of us and leaves us alone until we reache a certain state of evolution. Based on the fact that we haven't discovered any extraterrestrial life yet, mankind should try to make life on earth noticeable by transmitting signals and sending beacons into space. The gold plate on Voyager 1 is a good example. Yes I know I'm an optimist by believing that extraterrestrial life is kind and eager like we try to be. Let's assume that an other intelligent species acts the same way (sending out signals and beacons). Mankind should try to find evidence for such species, and SETI is a very ambitious and exemplary project. That's the reason why I run SETI@home. Even if we may not find extraterrestrial signals for the next decades, we just have to listen long enough and encourage mankind to start more projects of this kind. I won't make any predictions about when and how mankind could discover extraterrestrial life, because it could take place in circumstances that we can't imagine yet because it may happen a few hundret or thousand years from now. Who knows...
