Profile: Martin McNeil

Personal background
I was brought into this world in January of 1974 and am resident in a town to the south east of Glasgow, Scotland. As of writing this, my partner and I have recently launched our own business. You can see it at http://www.1stchoiceflowers.com . I'm the "tech-head" behind it and Claire is the "money-head" - we're just about as unhinged as each other that this whole thing might work!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think it would be the most arrogant thought to assume that human civilization is the only "intelligent" life in our universe.. the vast distances between stars and galaxies, coupled with the immense number of planetary systems that must exist, means (to my mind, at least) that the odds are in the favour of more life being out there.

The possible rewards of making contact with an extraterrstrial intelligence far outweigh any potential dangers and besides - were there any hostile intentions, given our species history it would be more like poetic justice.

Should we transmit a beacon for others to find? Well, since the first radio broadcasts, I guess we already have As to a more specific signal, my thoughts run along the lines of something simple that would convey a message of "Hey! We're over here! Come and see us if you can..."

I run SETI@home because of an old saying - 'A problem shared is a problem halved.' Plus, it's an interesting experiment in the power of the web and distributed computing. Each work unit that we process brings us one step closer to finding that signal we all know is out there - by working together, we'll find it just that little bit faster.
