Personal background |
I'm a 39-year-old software development consultant and hacktivist in Louisville, KY, USA. My biggest hobby is advancing ideas and developing systems for expanded civic participation. I also enjoy politics/current events, movies/shows, music, writing, travel, biking, bowling, cooking (I'm the family gastronome), board games, yard sales and of course, astronomy. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I absolutely believe extraterrestrial life exists, although I think it's unlikely that advanced, sentient life lives within our celestial neighborhood. However, that doesn't mean we shouldn't continue to look for it, as we learn a lot in the process (heck, look how much has been learned about distributed computing!). I don't think the dangers are strong enough to be concerned about, and I don't think there are many alien civilizations who have visited us thus far; I believe these things as I also believe that the Earth is, unhappily, a remote planet, given where it's placed in the galaxy. Think of the Earth as a rural oasis in the middle of nowhere, whereas in other parts of the galaxy you'll run into "big neighborhoods" of inhabited planets. I run SETI@home because I believe in the project, but also because I like the competition and the increased exposure to my web site as I climb up in the ranks. |
