Personal background
I'm a network engineer from Manchester, CT (love New England!). My primary hobbies are owkring with Linux, getting old Sun hardware (and new) to work properly,
camping, canoeing and volunteering for Boy Scouts. Seti@Home is a worthwhile endeavour
and it is also a good way to test the performance of my systems (new and old).

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
SETI (in all it's forms) is probably one of the greatest quests of all time.
While I believe that there is intellegent life out in the universe, I doubt that we will
find it in our life time (at least via radio waves). When (and if) we do detect
ET signals, it will have profound scientific and theological significance. Actually,
I would be somewhat concerned about the effect this discovery would have on religion.
As far as whether we should send out a beacon, we already have been for the past hundred years (or so).
I think that continuing discoveries in quantum mechanics will eventually lead to as
big an advance in communications as radio was in the late 19th and early 20th century
(and will perhaps alow us to "talk" to anyone out there).
