Personal background
Hi y'all -
I'm a longtime Seti fan and supporter, and an amateur astronomer. Actually, I'm too pitiful of an astronomer to be called amateur, so let's stick with enthusiast. As far as my terrestrial origins, :) I'm a native Houstonian and 8th generation Texan on my dad's side, and a first-generation American on my mom's side. She's from Ireland, hence the old Gaelic name. In case you're wondering, it's properly pronounced "Sor-ka". I am a diehard Sci-Fi/Fantasy fan. I enjoy the genre in print, film and TV. And yes, I am a Trekkie. I also like NASCAR, which I guess makes me a High-Tech Redneck gal. I'm married to a former Marine who is also a Trekkie, a NASCAR fan, and he's WAY better with the telescope than I am. Living in Houston is a great perk, since we're both avid supporters of the space program, and have several friends who work at NASA! Aside from what I've written, my only other hobbies would be spoiling our pets - 3 cats, Scrappy, Stitch and Cheeto, and 2 dogs, Brenna and Madigan - and reading. My favorite authors (all genres) include Orson Scott Card, Patricia Cornwell, and Anne McCaffrey. I'm currently pushing 35, but by my standards, every year on this side of the dirt is a good one, so I don't complain!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
My Opinions on Seti@Home:
I think it's an excellent idea - using idle machines belonging to space nuts all over to process data... What a stroke of genius!
I'm glad to be able to help lend my system and the systems in the lab I manage to help in the processing, and I have no doubt at all that one of the people in this program will find that signal we're all waiting for.
On Extraterrestrial Life:
I think it is the most arrogant supposition in the history of mankind to assume that in all the billions of galaxies, stars and planets that we are the ONLY speck of life in the universe. I mean, how obtuse can one person be? (Aside from the fundamentalists who don't belive in evolution, that is...)There can't NOT be life that's evolved elsewhere in the universs - now as to whether or not they've already paid us a visit, I can't say.
On Contact:
I'd imagine that contact will come either via light waves or radio signals. I don't honestly think that we'll be the one initiating contact merely for the fact that given the time species have had to evolve, statistically there's a great probability that there are more advanced who will be doing the knocking on the door. I just hope we're polite enough to answer! I think that the benefits, after pure speculation, would be...beneficial for lack of a better word! I can't be specific, and I don't want to guess, but I can't see how things could really be bad. I mean, if they were, would we really be able to do anything anyway? So why not be optimistic!
