Profile: Jim

Personal background
I grew up in a southern Illinois town called Mascoutah, a teaming metropolis of 5200 people. During high school I was a cadet in the Civil Air Patrol and worked my way up to the rank of Cadet Captain, serving as Clinton Scott Composite Squadron's Cadet Commander. We participated in various flood control tasks in 1973 when the Missisloppy got too big for its banks. Once (briefly) I flew a T-39.

I joined the U.S. Navy's nuclear power program in 1973 and became a machinist's mate (MM3/MM2). I served on the USS Guam (LPH-9) while waiting for a seat at my next school, trained at NPS Bainbridge MD, NPTU Windsor Locks CT, USS Samuel Gompers (AD-37) and USS Long Beach (CGN-9). On the "Sammy G" I was fresh out of Nuke School and assigned to the Nuclear Support Facilities (R-6 Division) where I qualified as a Radcon Monitor. After 6 months I was transferred to the USS Long Beach (the finest ship in her class, and IMHO the entire known universe!) where I served as a Mechanical Operator assigned to B-1 Division, standing watches and operating and maintaining the mechanical and fluid systems for #1 Reactor and its auxiliary systems. My other duties included Gas Free Engineer, Damage Control Petty Officer and General Nuisance. I was assigned to Repair 5 as #2 Investigator/#2 Nozzleman. I was Young and Stupid and the Navy and I didn't get along very well. There's a lot I would change about that time in my life but thanks to God's grace it's covered!

I work for the U.S. Postal Service at Norwood Station in Knoxville, Tennessee as a Sales, Services and Distribution Associate (window clerk). In the past I have worked as an acting supervisor, letter sorting machine operator, ad hoc trainer, quality control technician and AFSM 100 (flat sorting machine) operator.

I'm a freelance photographer and videographer. I build PC's for fun and profit. I've created and maintain a small website (and I'm thinking about changing its theme, now that my son is in college). I'm into MOST music genres (if it sounds good, it is good), stamp art, history, astronomy, oriental dragons, coffee, and finding out how things tick (fizzle, buzz).

I've been through the Bermuda Triangle a few times, and crossed the Equator at the International Date Line (hence the "Golden Shellback"). I've travelled the North Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, the South China Sea (often), and the Arabian Sea (when Idi Amin took Americans hostage). I've been to New Zealand, Australia (twice), Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Mauritius, and the Phillipines (more times than I can count). I've been to most of the 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Belize, and Grand Cayman. I've also been 107 feet below the surface of the Carribean in a submarine.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Ever since I was a kid watching our earliest steps into space travel (from Mercury on) and our first steps on the Moon, I've been excited about space exploration.

I believe everything in the Bible to be literal truth and that all true science must start there. Jesus created a large, finite number of angels. These may account for some of the UFO's that we've seen. This may not explain the "nuts and bolts" physical craft that have been reported.

There may be other created beings. I want to find the truth.
