Personal background
I'm a 51 year old custom pool cue maker today. I once owned a Scuba Diving business and taught dive classes in Georgia, Florida, Colorado, the Bahamas and Mexico. That was before I spent 20 years in the newspaper business. I held various mamagement positions culminating with General Manager and Publisher. I play golf and pool when I can. I am very hapily married to Diane.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Extraterrestrial life exists. It is probably far more diverse and abundant than we can imagine. Assuming all the conspiracy theories are just that, and otherworldly beings are not currently among us, we or our robot explorers will just bump into them someday. Providing we quit screwing around and begin serious exploration of and colonization of our solar system. Ultimately that should set us on a path of near earth star systems colonization. The first ETs will most likely be microbial or relatively simple plant life. Most likely we won?t have much to talk about.

The scientific benefits will be enormous for areas like biology and genetics. With the exception of disease or contamination I see little downside.

We've been sending out radio and television signals for over 50 years. Providing we last long enough and continue aggressive colonization, eventual contact is inevitable. It would be only courteous to ring the doorbell before barging into someone else's home.
