Personal background
Hello! I'm 18 years old and I live in Porto, the 2nd biggest city of Portugal. I'm currently a first year in Biochemistry at FCUP, the local university, and I'm enjoying very much my course. I spend most of my time in front of the computer, whether playing games or surfing the internet. However, when I'm not, I delight myself reading and drawing people (which is a gift I was born with :)). I also love to watch a soccer game, especially if it envolves my all-time favourite and best club of the world: Futebol Clube do Porto (FCP)!!!! And, of course, this applies to Portugal Soccer Team, too! I don't practice any sports because i do not have neither the will nor the patience :P, although i practiced swimming years ago. I'm an intelligent but modest person and easy to deal with.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I suspect it must exist, because it would be very inconceavable to imagine such a huge, incomensurable universe, still expanding, with only our "little corner" sustaining life! I believe there must be other places with conditions to support life, although i don't know if it would be simple or more complex than us.
If it depended only of us, humans, we would that an awful lot of time to find evidences of ET life, since we can hardly expand our space exploration beyond our system, without it taking a lot of costs.
I guess we'd gain much more than we could lose, by discovering other inhabbited planets. Our knowledge of the universe and life would increase exponentially.
The idea of a beacon is good, however it would have to be very strong and permanently turned on, so we could have a chance to "hit" anything, even if anyone wasn't searching for us. The information should be cientifical or mathematical so only intelligent life could receive and understand it.
I run Seti@home because i like to participate in these kind of projects and I like very much astronomy.
